Update [Fri 22nd Mar, 2024 14:45 GMT]: Songbird Productions has just revealed a bit more information about its upcoming reissue of Tempest 3000 for the Nuon. This includes a price, the date that pre-orders go live, and what exactly is going to be included in the package.
According to the company's newsletter, purchasing a new copy of the game will net you a factory-pressed Nuon DVD, a full-color manual, and a plastic DVD case with a full-color wrap. All of this will cost you $79.95 (or $10 less if you've already bought a JagFest ticket or are a Virtual Supporter - Superfan). Pre-orders for the release are scheduled to start on April 4th on the Songbird Productions website.
Are you going to try and pick up a copy? Let us know!
Original Story [Thu 14th Mar, 2024 12:30 GMT]: If you're a fan of Jeff Minter's work, we've got some good news to share with you that doesn't necessarily relate directly to the recently released Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story.
The retro publisher Songbird Productions has just announced that it is working with Atari to do a brand-new limited-run reissue of Tempest 3000 (Minter's Tempest 2000 sequel) for Nuon-compatible DVD players, with the pricing and pre-order details still yet to be revealed.
Tempest 3000 was notably one of the games that was missing from the Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story compilation recently released by Digital Eclipse for consoles & PC, with Chris Kohler telling us in an interview that it "would have been a bridge too far to try and emulate".
This, therefore, seems like the next best thing, hopefully providing players with a cheaper way of purchasing the game than some of the second-hand listings we've been seeing online lately.
Of course, you'll still have to go to the effort of tracking down a Nuon-compatible DVD player and a controller if you actually want to play it and don't have one already, but as our contributor Ashley Day notes consoles are still relatively affordable.
There is also a range of N64 controller adaptors for the console available from Songbird Productions too, meaning you won't have the problem of shelling out tons for the original controllers.

A new Nuon release is most certainly not something I expected to see ever. But this is a pretty cool hyper-niche thing to see them doing.
does anyone else remember when NUON was announced originally as Project X? I read about it and Dreamcast (and "ray tracing") in the same issue of Next Generation and I was pretty pumped for both!
Something no one mentions anymore but I like: NUON stands for "Nobody Understands Our New technology."
I might have to finally get a NUON, thanks article!
"Of course, you'll still have to go to the effort of tracking down a Nuon and a controller"
As I understand "Nuon" was released an extra feature of certain DVD players, rather than its own console.
I have no idea of the scarcity, but at least it's not what I heard was the rarest Nuon game, a Korean licensed game that was packed in and only compatible with a single Korean Samsung DVD player.
I'm sure the 5 people who have a working Nuon will be over the moon. What is probably harder to find is a Nuon that has a half decent compatible controller because if I am correct the controllers themselves aren't compatible with all models.
I really want to know the quantity of DVDs they’re pressing. I’m sure many of the copies purchased will remain sealed as investments or artifacts. Still pretty awesome Songbird is doing something like this.
All 5 people who have a working Nuon hooked up will be pleased.
Looking forward to opening pre-orders next week. Let's do this!!
