Sonic Amauter Games Expo (SAGE) off-shoot Really Amateur Games Expo (RAGE) is back this year, and the theme is Sonic Mania 2 – with a twist.
As ever, the objective here is to make a terrible game, not a good one. Entrants are encouraged to create "the stupidest, silliest, and terrible game within the theme of this year" and have two weeks to get it done – the deadline is Valentine's Day.
As ever, there are rules to adhere to:
+ No NSFW, hateful content of any kind, obviously.
+ Needs to follow the theme, at least loosely. (Have fun with it, there's a lot of freedom)
+ No spam, ad or harmful content and no messing around with people's Windows.
+ Must be done by the the deadline.
+ Using frameworks or done assets is completely fine, you can do whatever.
+ No AI usage, jokes can be made about AI, but no generative art may be used.
+ Needs to be bad.
+ Deadline is February 14th, 11:59pm PT. You have exactly two weeks to make your game, make it count.
MotorRoach will hold a live stream featuring the 'best' entries, and while a winner will be crowned, the organisers are keen to stress that no prizes will be offered – your reward will be the knowledge that you've created the worst Sonic Mania sequel imaginable.

Good thing they specified "amateur" or Sonic Team would have this in the bag.
@Razieluigi Perfect joke.
I think it doesn't make sense to prohibit AI art for an amateur competition. Is this not exactly the type of situation where it would flourish? For small-time indie creators? I make tons of pixel art with AI but then manually edit it to fix the wonkiness.
So they want Sonic Mania 2 to be a bad game?
@Razieluigi The organizers had better keep an eye out for anyone trying to sneak in under a name like "Yuka Naji" or "Ohto Naoshima".
@dconstantine I think they are basically trying to discourage your exact attitude, and methods. I think they want to encourage people to hire real artists for their teams.
I actually love this.
I would 100% be entering into this if I knew even the slightest about making a game. It’s something I’ve always toyed with on the very edge and never get far enough to warrant progress. All tutorials are good for the first few pages and then BAM they start talking about some stuff that comes out of nowhere and that’s the wall I always hit.
Anyway, that’s a personal problem I guess. Point being, this is exactly what I’d love to be involved in lol
Make something silly, in a medium I like, with an IP I adore.
There's enough shovelware already. Why are they asking people to make more? 😆
