On May 11th, Banpresto's 1994 arcade title Mazinger Z will join Hamter's Arcade Archives series in Japan – but there's a catch. The game will retail for ¥1500, almost twice the traditional ¥800 cost of games in the long-running series.
Why? Well, as Twitter account @gosokkyu notes, this is the first game in the Archive Archives series to boast a sizable media licence, so presumably, the cost to renew said licence is the reason for the higher price tag.
It might be prudent, then, to expect any future licenced titles to retail for the same amount.
According to the Mazinger Wiki, Banpresto's game is a vertically-scrolling shooter based on the anime and sees the player assume the role of either Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, or Grendizer.
"As the robot flies through the level it attacks enemies with several attacks like beams and missiles," explains the Wiki. "Enemies can attack from several points: some stand still while throwing projectiles, some can fly while firing projectiles, some will attempt to ram into the robot, while others simply do nothing but just move."
There are eight stages in total, and the game was never ported to any home system. Mazinger Z will launch digitally on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
Will you be picking this one up, despite the increased cost? Let us know with a comment.

id prefer a license-removed version, but i know that still incurs cost. like just in general, f licenses for the most part.
I assume that's gonna translate to $14.99 in North America. I doubt I'd pay that much for this particular game, but for something like Konami's X-Men or The Simpsons games it'd be more worth it for me.
I bet if Sailor Moon reaches Arcade Archives, that would sell really well. Banpresto also has other non-licensed games such as Air Gallet and Gundhara.
Not a fan of Mazinger, but if Hamster gets any licensed Capcom, Konami, or Data East I'll be there. Would be nice to see Area 88/U.N. Squadron, the Aliens vs Predator beat 'em up, Konami's 1990 Aliens arcade game, The Simpsons, X-Men, Bucky O'hare, and Data East's Robocop to name a few.
Hamster is amazing, even resurrecting licensed games now! I had no idea there was a Mazinger arcade game. The price is a little steep but as fan of old super robots I will certainly invest in this.
Hopefully it brings more memorable licensed games to Arcade Archives, like Aliens, Area 88, Superman, Capt America and the Avengers, etc.
You know, there’s one game they NEED to get out, and that’s Irem’s Spartan X (Kung Fu here in the West). And Konami’s Dark Labyrinth really sparked my imagination back when I was a kid. I’d love to see that again.
If the Microids Grendizer attempt fails as it looks like it will, there's our chance to control our beloved UFO Robot in a decent game (although here, during 58 minutes of footage, the player has not selected Grendizer once).
@mrbogus I'd expect Capcom to stick to their "Arcade Stadium" release model for their old arcade games.
