The centonate (or "patchwork") nature of many these chants reveals that respond and verses were carefully crafted and conceived as a unit, ruling out a ninth-century origin of the verses, as Apel and others had proposed.
There can be no doubt about the importance of centonate structures in Byzantine chant, but most Byzantine chant is also highly variable from manuscript to manuscript - much more so than Latin chant - and Doda neglects this factor.
