The cinnoline (99) was surely formed, based on the result that the enehydrazine part attacked the root of the MsO group in a nucleophilic manner, followed by an aromatic addition-elimination reaction but not cyclization, as shown by the intermediate 100.
These alkaloids include quinazoline, quinaxaline, cinnoline, phthalazine and other three or four membered ring azaheterocycles such as, pteridine, alloxazine, isoalloxazine [1].

We have designed and synthesized a novel 2.2'-dichloro 5, 6, 10, 5', 6', 10'-hexaaza double [4]helicene by way of an iterative protocol comprised of Ullmann coupling of 2.4-dichloronitrobenzene 1 followed by Wilcox diazotization of 2, 2'-dinitro-5, 5'-dichlorobiphenyl 2 and a selective nitration of 2, 7-dichlorobenzo[c] cinnoline 3.
The second supplement updates Simpson's 1953 and Singerman and Patel's 1973 publications in this series by surveying the literature on both cinnolines and phthalazines published from 1972 through 2004, an impressive feat (1041 references are cited).
The book contains six chapters covering synthesis, reactions and applications in the following subject areas: pyridazines, cinnolines, benzocinnolines and phthalazines; pyrimidines and quinazolines; pyrazines and related ring structures; phenzine, oxazine, thiazine and sulphur dyes; quinazoline alkaloids; six-membered rings with three or more hetero-atoms.
