DUST while a great overhaul of New Vegas into a brutal survival game leaves a number of aspects of vanilla untouched and thus feeling very out of place, particularly the Speech skill. There are no friendly NPCs to negotiate with so it remains utterly useless to put points into, though it still shows up in the skill menu at level up. This mod tries to remedy this by converting Speech into the Traps skill. All traps in game now require the traps skill to disarm, some of them have quite a high requirement (no more disarming and picking up mines like you know exactly how they work at level 1). Crafting explosive based traps also requires the Traps skill now including: powder charges, toaster mines, bottlecap mines, and satchel charges.
Additionally, the light step perk requires 100 Traps now instead of 75 Sneak. Makes sense you would need to be an expert in Traps to avoid all of them so perfectly right?
Several other small related changes are included as well:
Message boxes for disarming traps no longer appear, instead you’ll either disarm the trap if you have the requirement or get a corner message if you don’t. Rearming bear traps also no longer has a message box.
The names of the book and magazine for the Traps (former speech) skill have been changed to better reflect that it is no longer about lying or persuasion.
The prompt when looking at traps such as the rigged shotgun is changed from “Activate ____” to “Disarm ____”
Powder charges no longer require the mad bomber perk to craft (efficient recipe still requires mad bomber, same with efficient version of all other explosives).
Bottlecap mines no longer require a schematic to craft (you can still craft them using the explosives skill if you have the schematic though).
This mod will only be incompatible with other mods that change how existing traps function by editing their scripts. Or anything that alters the recipes for toaster mines from DUST, powder charges, or satchel charges. Anything else should be compatible.
Load this mod below DUSTed DUST, otherwise the grenade bouquet will revert to using the explosives skill to disarm.
