Rome - Total Music is strongly recommended to enchance your game experience! By default, there is only original RTW music in the mod.
Please note that the mod requires RomeTW-ALX.exe file to work! If you don't have Rome: TW Alexander expansion, don't worry, you just need to copy RomeTW-ALX.exe to your Rome: Total War folder. Download it from here
1. Copy NL_2 folder from the archive to your Rome - Total War folder. A folder NL_2 should appear inside your game folder, near EXE file. It won't interfere with NL folder of original Barbarian Empires mod, do not overwrite it as they can work separately!
2. Run the provided Start Hellenistic Legacy.bat file located inside NL_2 folder to play the mod
If you are using Steam RTW Alexander, try making a following trick:
Use button "Add a game" at the bottom of your game list, then "Add a non-Steam game", then found in the list and select RomeTW-ALX.exe file from your Steam Alexander folder. Yes, you now have a two copies of Alexander in your games library! This will allow you to launch the same Steam EXE with different mods, by using different launch properties, while still having full benefits of Steam overlay, game time count and screenshots.
Right click this Rome - Total War: Alexander copy, Properties->Set launch options and add the following line (make sure to NOT add space before the first symbol):
-nm -ne -show_err -noalexander -mod:NL_2
Hello people ! I'm here to present you a successor to the mod Lanjane's Barbarian Empires, made by Lanjane. The story of Lanjane's Barbarian Empire begun as a simple sub-mod for the Macedon Expansion mod but it ended up being a fully stand-alone mod with it's own unique taste .
Since i played the mod i was always excited with it! It was my favorite mod actually and i enjoyed playing it. Around February, an idea came to my mind, to introduce The Kingdom of Baktria as a replacer for Scipii roman family. I was always excited with Baktria and the idea of adding it to my favorite mod was mesmerizing me. After many tries and errors, sometimes feeling that i should abandon the idea too, Baktria was added in the game succesfully. In this moment, i would like to thank my friend Suppanut, because without him it wouldn't be succesful. He destroyed many errors and bugs and he was my mentor for how to change a faction culture succesfully.
After we added Baktria, we saw that the remaining romans (Brutii and Senate) are not working as they should so we decided to replace them too, adding the Kingdom of Bosporus instead of the Senate and the Kingdom of Epirus in place of Brutii.
While I did most of coding work, so we can have a base for the factions, my friend Lanjane has done all the faction reskins and unit cards. I can't thank him enough for bringing my dreams to life. He is an awesome skinner and modder and without him the mod wouldn't exist at all.
Except for the 3 new factions what else is in the mod, you may ask? Changes to Arabia, Africa and northern part of the map, introducing unconquerable Terra Incognita (thanks Suppanut), new auxiliary officers for all the factions that have auxiliary units (for example, Roman Republic has access to auxiliary barbarian units if they conquer the right territories, these units will have native barbarian officers), new units for the 3 new factions and many other things!!!
Some of the chosen features:
Baktria. The land of a thousand golden cities! With a strong infantry and awesome cavalry and good missile support. They will have to face their Seleucid, Parthian and Scythian enemies! Their roster effectively mirrors the roster of their main rival: Seleucid Empire.
Epirus. A faction that has enemies in many sides but a flexible army, with elephants, phalangites and strong cavalry! Epirus roster incorporates italic, thracian and macedonian troops into one effective war machine.
Bosporus. A Greek kingdom with a mix of Greek, Scythian and Thracian units, they are ready to punish their adversaries! Set a strong powerbase in Crimea and expand your kingdom!
Apron Hoplites: A unique attachment to the shields of hoplites, protecting their lower body parts from enemy missiles.

Q: What do i need to run this mod ?
A: Please download a full PDF documentation on how to install the mod: Barbarian Empires Documentation
Q: Why there are no historical battles and provincial campaigns in this mod like there were in Lanjane's Barbarian Empires?
A: Historical battles and campaigns require many changes and fixing to make them work with the new factions, so they are temporarily disabled in the addon. All these campaigns would require many hours of coding to work with the new faction set and of course various balancing fixes so they can be playable. We will slowly implement them back in future versions.
Q: Why there are so many units in custom battles for my faction? What an unhistorical mess!
A: What you see are AOR troops (locals available in certain locations of the map). Don't panic. In campaign, it will take time and a conquering routine to get access to these units.
Q: Will there be a future releases?
A: Sure. We are polishing this mod and implement new things. You can help with advices and suggestions too, if you join our Discord and help us with your feedback.
Q: Can i do a sub-mod for this mod and release it to the public?
A: You can make a sub-mod for your own personal use, but you are not allowed to release it to the public. We decided to not allow submodding because this mod is constantly updating and players would be confused with many versions available.
Q: Why there is no Senate or Senate missions in the mod for romans or other factions?
A: The Senate missions work with superfaction system, which requires to sacrifice a faction to become a passive one province seater. We decided to not do it so all factions can play and be played as normally.
The main contact and leader of the mod is Nicolai Lanjane. The mod is hosted exclusively on ModDB, because it gives us the idea and statistics who is playing our mod and lets us react to bug reports, adapt for feedback and fanbase. If you want to host it on another website, please send a PM and request a permission first.
Don't steal. If you want to take something from this mod for your own mod please communicate with the mod leader.
No sub-mods for public release are allowed.
Greetings. Everytime I start the Imperial Campaign, the game stops to work. I installed the mod yesterday night, I took a quick look at the campaign map,factions... Tonight I start the mod, choose a faction, and as soon as the game loads and takes me to the campaign map, it says "Alexander total war found an error... Could you please help me? Much obliged. Is it somewhat related to the campaig map?
P:S: Where are those amazing units guarding Taxilla as garrison? Because I sent a spy near the city and the units that I saw were not those of the image.
Meh... cant put this mod to work, i followed all the steps but when i start Alexander total war to launch the mod via steam it said: Failed to read censored word dictionary file: on data//chat_filter.san. idk what this is but it simply close the game
Sorry for late reply. I updated instruction (see this file's description) to make it more clear. Could you try now?
If this won't help, find me in our Discord for online help: Discordapp.com
The Hellenistic Legacy does not shoot towers in the city of Tomy.
Towers do not shoot at all in this mod series (both in LBE and HL). This is intended feature.
Hi, since the new mod update came in, I get an issue with the music data base and apparently a script line error to do with dominant religion.
Hello! You could find me in Discord (link in the mod's description), let's try to solve your issues online
amazing -> so much fun
Thank you very much!
Hi, i have a problem with the music addon,i doesn't seem to work for me, i tried everithing but the vanilla music is still the only that plays
Hello!
Make sure to copy the files to vanilla RTW folder, not a modfolder (you'll be asked to overwrite a few files in the process, but that's okay, see readme)
Now as you copy the files there will be a .bat file inside RTW folder called "set_music.bat". Run it, and you'll see a prompt which number is for which culture. Press a number from 1 to 7 on your keyboard to select the culture you are going to play, and then start the mod (or vanilla game, depends what do you want to play)
Hope this helps
What's the purpose of the Mysterious Monument in the terra incognita region?
Lanjane, crazyroman, this is really the best mod out there and I like playing the new factions. If I could make one suggestion: I play Seleucids alot, but could the color of the Seleucids be changed? They are grey and the minor civs are also a shade of gray. It makes for a bland color palette on the battlefield with all the troops grey. Any color would do. I let you decide. Regards
Thank you very much!
To change color of all the units of the faction, that's too much work. It means manually recoloring every single factional texture, faction symbol, banners, interface etc. Unfortunately it doesn't work as easy as in Warhammer 2.
Hello. I have an issue. The .bat file closes instanteniously and doesn't do anything. Any tips or tricks? I use windows 10 and theres no way I'm going back to windows 7 since RTW doesn't work on it for me
Hello! Do you have a RTW-ALX.exe file in Rome Total War folder? And do you have NL_2 folder inside of RTW folder?
Hey There. First, let me thank you all for your hard work and to everyone else who worked on this project. Normally I would just try to solve issues by myself, but I really want to play this mod. Every time I load it up, I never am nor can I access the full screen. This would not be a huge problem expect that means every time I want to click on something like the family tree, I end up clicking out of the game. Any idea how to fix this?
Hello!
1. Set your game resolution the same as your desktop resolution. This can be edited in NL_2/preferences/preferences.txt. These lines:
STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
2. If this didn't help, and you are using Windows 10 laptop, fix your Windows interface scaling (by default it is 150%, set it to 100%)
Yeah, that fixed the issue for me. Thank you so much, my guy. Hope you have a healthy happy new year.
Sir, there is a problem. Units start to look kinda bulky and fat. Maybe this have to be an innue with resolution. If i want to get it back to normal (as it should be) but my screen simply does not support it, what should i do?
In roman campaign i can recruit barbarian units (such sa gothic axmen, barbarian cavalry...) in region of north africa. Could you change it? IT IS really weird.
What do you expect me to change? When vandals historically conquered Africa they could for sure train young vandal warriors in newly conquered african cities. So what's wrong?
I play sa roman republic and in hippo for exemple i can recruit goths. IT could be some native numidians. In 3rd century BC goths in north africa😁😁😁
It means you have very well developed infrastructure and can afford to import germanic cavalry auxillaries there. For example romans used batavians and illyrians almost everywhere, and there are even tombs of syrian warriors near roman fort in Britannia. If you have a big enough empire you can transfer large amount of people where you want.
I control only mediterranean region (italian peninsula, sicily, corsica, Sardínia, Massilia, some provinces in hispania and greece and two provinces in northern africa). Maybe if i could hire these germans in the south of galia (mercenaries or slaves?) but not in northern africa. Goths came to Romans view in 3rd century AD. In greece i can recruit logicaly hoplites, phalangites ... but in numidia goths, nice. In game you have also an error "Dinasty family member". IT should be Dynasty with y.
Thank you for the feedback! Join our Discord and help the mod, I'm working on the new patch and your ideas may greatly support it.
In mod you have the roman character name "Quintis", IT should be Quintus. I like your mod and cant wait for new patch. Can you give us some details of next version?
Hello!
The next version of Hellenistic Legacy will feature hundreds of polishing tweaks to battle and strategy balance, completely reworked Carthage roster, a lot of new mercenaries, and much less harsh recruitment restrictions than in the current HL version. It still won't be as easy to access units as in LBE, but it will allow you to avoid some useless backtracking to replenish casualties. For example some of AOR units would be able to integrate to your faction's military forever if you build special AOR barracks, acting as a military colony of specific tribes historically neighbouring or allied to your faction. There will be less golden chevron rebels around, allowing smaller AI factions to expand better. Also crazyroman and me managed to implement XGM traits. There are lots and lots of improvements.
Yeah, i just realized that. I'm in 60+ turns and only Rome, Macedom and me are the one conquering stuff, all other factions are not attacking. m/m with Carthage.

Hey Lanjane!
So after playing through the mod a bit, I really really enjoy what you and the team did with this mod, especially with the sheer number of units! However, I think there's one major issue with this mod in my opinion (again, feel free to disagree, this is just what I see), and that is the fact that rebels are too strong. I understand that you were trying to make them feel more like minor civilizations to conquer (additionally with the slower pacing), but it is at the point where they is never a reason for me to attack rebels when I can just attack other factions. These factions are much much easier to defeat, and additionally I can defeat a rival faction very quickly if I just do not attach any rebels. If it is a choice between starting an unnecessary war or bringing all of my forces in my empire against one full stack (with absurd experience and excellent units too!) of rebels, I will fight other factions everytime. I therefore can't imagine playing a faction surrounded by rebels because I feel like I would get nowhere. This is just my opinion though, especially because I like to play a faster paced game, so do with this opinion what you will. Also, for reference, I have thousands of hours in both Rome and Medieval II, so I can't imagine I'm the only one with this opinion. Everything else is fantastic though!
Hello Boosky!
Yes, it's a well known issue with this mod version. It is fixed in developers version (unreleased yet). I plan to release it one day when I finish some more work for it. Join our Discord, if you wish to help or just stay in contact with the currently largest modding community of RTW
Hi does one RomeTW-ALX.exe will work for both mods Barbarian empires and hellenistic legacy?
Yes. Each of the mods has its own bat file to launch, located in its own mod folder.
Thank you for all your feedback I have installed your music file it's lovely but if I need to verify integrity of game will those 2 files I delete from sounds regenerate and need to delete again? Plus do I need to install your music again?
Yes, if you verify integrity of game files you'll need to reinstall music mod since it affects some of vanilla files, including those.
Thank you for the info

Hello! Which campaign you are playing?
Find me in Discord (the link is on the mods page), I'll try to solve your problem
