An okay read for me. I was disappointed that the romance between Spensa and Jorgen came on out of nowhere. Sure they had 6 months together but I didn’t witness their bantering. All of a sudden Spensa just threw herself at him. A spy mission to an unknown territory and only one person went. Of course there’s M-Bot but still. Then Jorgen admitted that he was attracted to her, but when? There weren’t any signs. The Superiority portion didn’t capture my attention well. I just didn’t care so much for all that going on. M-Bot didn’t fail to bring humor so he’s a plus. This book used the they/them non-binary for aliens. I stopped reading on page 253. I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to try to finish reading this book. I don’t want this book to hold me up from starting a new story.

This book started with Spensa, Lieutenant and her ship’s AI, M-Bot, 6 months later, in the middle of a battle against the Krell. After book 1, Spensa learned that the Krell were actually aliens and prison guards assigned to keep the humans from leaving the planet Detritus. They in turn hired remote drones to start sky battles against the humans. These battles kept humans busy so they don’t have time to plan escape routes from Detritus. The Krell’s boss were the Superiority and they feared Cytonics, which are people who can see into space and listen in on faster than light communication. Spensa, her great grandmother, and her dad had the ability to hear the communication and see them looking back. From book 1, Spensa learned that she can also teleport but currently doesn’t know how to control it. She attempted to put herself in danger to activate the cytonic during a battle but it didn’t work. The Superiority wanted Cytonics gone so they tried to kill Spensa. While watching the sky, they caught sight of a lone ship coming. Spensa gave chase and found this person to be a cytonic just like her. The lady alien who looked a lot like human was on her way to Superiority to try out for their military because they are recruiting. Spensa snatched the opportunity to infiltrate Superiority by going in place of the alien lady and possibly steal their technology. Everyone got promoted in this book. The main goal is to find a way off this planet Detritus in order to find another safe planet to live or reunite with other humans. Part 3 offered a surprise view from Jorgen.
