New book: Sailors and Seababies

A lot of years ago, I read Charles Kingsley’s The Water-Babies to my youngest daughter (and she was very young). I took notes about how and where I edited “on the fly,” as they say. In some respects we turned it into a choose-your-own story, as I would say, “OK, now Mr. Kingsley is going to give us a long speech about doctors who give children bad medicine. Should we read that or jump to the next

No Boats on Bannermere by Geoffrey Trease
"This review also appears on my blog, Read-at-Home Mom.

When Bill and Sue Melbury move with their single mother to Beckfoot Cottage in Bannerdale, they are surprised to learn that their neighbor, Sir Alfred Askew who owns Bannermere Hall, allows no boa" Read more of this review »
Anne White and 25 other people liked Andrew Schirmer's review of Sartor Resartus:
Sartor Resartus by Thomas Carlyle
"They simply don't make 'em like they used to...

Sartor Resartus is one of Carlyle's supreme creations, to be sat alongside the towering achievement of his French Revolution. It's a sort of novel-cum-philosophical-treatise-cum-satire, a lumbering behem" Read more of this review »

A strange book that keeps reminding us that it's a strange book (so let's move on from there). Sometimes funny, sometimes theological, sometimes philosophical, definitely brilliant, so you just have to run with it. ...more

"Pre-read for AO year 6! This book was the story of his life but weaved his theories and scientific works throughout, which I liked even though it was all very hard to wrap my mind around. But overall a very good book, and fit well alongside the histo" Read more of this review »

I was hoping to like this without reservation, hoping I'd find an absolute keeper, a Wolves of Willoughby Chase or something equally fun and fascinating, plus with a Christmas setting--what's not to like? But as it went on, my high hopes kind of sput ...more

Quotes by Anne E. White  (?)

“So we read books just because they make us happy or because they’re fun, because they will make us sound smart, because they’ll get us into college or a good job ahead of the others? Or should we use them as a practical guide to recognizing dragons? No, they show us that we have a purpose; that we can be useful in the world, and that is our pleasure. Education gives us minds more awake, and a life that is more than just passing time.”
Anne E. White, Minds More Awake: The Vision of Charlotte Mason

“I don’t say that it is true: but only that it is likely to be true. In science we must be cautious and modest, and ready to alter our minds whenever we learn fresh facts; only keeping sure of one thing, that the truth, when we find it out, will be far more wonderful than any notions of ours.”
Anne E. White, Further Afield: Kingsley's Lessons in Earth Lore, Volume 2

“Charlotte had her own Gifted and Talented program: Exercise, Nourishment, Change, and Rest. She said not to discourage a gifted child from doing what comes naturally; if he wants to play the violin or learn Latin at three, he’ll let you know. Let him do just so much as he takes to of his own accord; but never urge, never applaud, never show him off. (p. 77)”
Anne E. White, Minds More Awake (Revised Edition): The Vision of Charlotte Mason

“I've begun to realize that you can listen to silence and learn from it. It has a quality and a dimension all its own.”
Chaim Potok, The Chosen

“We do not list “humility” among our school subjects or put it on a transcript, but that is actually the little secret of classical education. The things that make it truly classical, truly worthwhile to pursue, aren’t school subjects at all, but principles that add depth and cohesion to everything we study in all areas of the curriculum. ❧ ❧ ❧”
Karen Glass, Consider This: Charlotte Mason and the Classical Tradition

“By all means," cried the bard, his eyes lighting up. "A Fflam to the rescue! Storm the castle! Carry it by assault! Batter down the gates!"
"There's not much of it left to storm," said Eilonwy.
"Oh?" said Fflewddur, with disappointment. "Very well, we shall do the best we can.”
Lloyd Alexander, The Book of Three

“I did not love cold harmony and perfect regularity of organization; what I sought was variety, mystery, tradition, the venerable, the awful. I despised sophisters and calculators; I was groping for faith, honor, and prescriptive loyalties. I would have given any number of neo-classical pediments for one poor battered gargoyle.”
Russell Kirk

“Few pay attention to the histories and the root pictures words can release. These neglected qualities are there, however, and the poets have always found them a self-delighting source of excitement.”
John Ciardi, How Does a Poem Mean?
