Believe it or not, I have read this massive book twice. Shirer, who spent much of the years leading up to WWII in Germany, fills in all the blanks and tells a tale of a country spiraling into madness and the ultimate failure of the "1,000 Year Reich". Suffice it to say, this is probably the finest book ever written on the history of Nazi Germany and is a "must read" for all history lovers. "Berlin Diary" also by Shirer is a good preface to this book. Magnificent!!!!

Hi Jill. When I was a senior in college, majoring in history, I wrote a paper on the rise of the Third Reich. What I did was go to the NYC public library and explore their microfilms of the NYTimes, searching for articles mentioning the rise of Hitler throughout the 1930s. I remember coming away with the feeling that the growing power of Hitler wasn't actually realized until it was too late. I still have that paper somewhere.

You need to find that paper!!!!! I agree that the population was unaware of what was happening until it was too late.....but if one of those assassination attempts would have succeeded, who knows what would have happened!!!

I could not agree more. A very good book. Some of his own generals wanted him assassinated. A very unfortunate turn of events before WW2. Hitler and many of his thugs needed a scape goat for the economic situation Germany was in at the time. The Jewish people were the brunt of the blame. A scary book in many ways.
My sweet, book-loving mother, read this book in her senior years. I may have to do the same!
I read this in 10th grade for a social studies report. I don't know what possessed me to read a 1700+ page book. The teacher basically gave me an A for attempting it.
Great review, Jill! Berlin Diary is already on my TBR list. Looks like I'll be adding this one too.
How long did this take you Jill? I've wanted to read this for some time but have seen posts of people taking a really long time to get it done.
