it was amazing
bookshelves: 2013-reread, 5-0, crime-mystery, favorites, thriller, lucas-davenport, sandford

Since his New York adventure from the last book was wrapped up, Lucas Davenport is again bored and at loose ends. With nothing better to do, Lucas is riding out a long winter in his cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. Once again it’s the murder of innocent people that will give Davenport something to occupy his time. The guy really needs a hobby…

A vicious killer who thinks of himself as the Iceman is desperate to stop a compromising photograph becoming public so he butchers a family and burns their house down to try and destroy it. With the town’s priest implicated in the crime and the small community terrified, the overwhelmed sheriff asks Davenport for help. As Lucas tries to track him down the Iceman grows ever more desperate and violent.

The Prey series has such a generally consistent level of quality that it’s hard to pick a high point for the series, but I’d name this one as my favorite. Having Lucas work with a bunch of small town cops was a new wrinkle to the formula, especially since the last book had Davenport in New York so it really felt like a change of pace.

The Iceman was one of the nastier and more memorable killers in the long list of villains the series has had, and Sandford did a great job of showing us his point of view while disguising his identity so that when he’s finally revealed it’s a very satisfying answer. This one is also a turning point for the series with the introduction of Weather Karkinnen, the doctor who’d become a very important figure in Lucas’s life.

Another aspect that sets this one apart is the backdrop of an absolutely brutal winter. Blizzards and temperatures well below freezing have made simply going outside incredibly dangerous. Sandford has a talent for making you feel the wind chill, and the way he describes a frozen wasteland creates a bleak mood that perfectly matches the crimes that drive the story. This one is Sandford at his best.

Next: Lucas vs. the psycho cat burglar in Night Prey.

James Thane I agree--one of the best books in the series. I had to put on about three extra layers just to stay warm while he was describing the nasty winter weather...

I put on my boots and Elmer Fudd hat even though it was over 80 degrees outside.

Priscilla Herman I really enjoyed this Lucas Davenport crime adventure. It all takes place in a part of Wisconsin with which I'm very familiar. It was fun to drive the roads that Davenport drove making it even scarier and memorable. I'm always waiting for the next Davenport thriller, and I really like Virgil Flowers, also. I usually read the books in one sitting, but I'm heartbroken when I've finished and have to wait a whole year for the next one.

LaDonna While I put Sandford's Virgil Flowers series in my favorite series list, I have really struggled to get through the Davenport books. But as I know you are also in the Kansas City area, I'm sure you can understand why today would be a good day to pick this one up. Always love your reviews, and as I added this one to my currently reading list, I had to read your review and leave my silly comment. Hope you can stay home and read through this nasty bit of winter weather so we'll have more great reviews to peruse!

The weather outside here in KC at the moment definately matches the tone of this one. I was reading Davenport long before Flowers came along so Lucas remains my favorite.

Tim Nice book to read after this brutal winter has finally broken! Description of the cold throughout the book does indeed come through in the writing as you've mentioned, and the small town winter setting really was a nice change of pace for Lucas Davenport from the big city in the last one. I'm pleased with the consistent quality of the books in this series so far, and am looking forward to the next one after reading your review of it, and am once again thankful for being able to select books & series based on your reviews.

The Prey series is one of the most consistent I've read, and it's pretty amazing that Sandford has kept the quality so high with pretty much the same formula over the years without letting it get stale either.

And I'm glad my reviews have been a help to you.

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile Is it very important to read these books in order? I've heard a lot of good about this one but I don't want to bother with the whole series.

Most are self-contained stories that don't need to be read in order, but if you check out a later one you'll obviously know some things like characters who survive a bad situation in an earlier one.

There are a couple that act as direct sequels to earlier books so I would read Eyes of Prey before Silent Prey. And Certain Prey should be read before Mortal Prey. Other than that, they can be read however you'd like.

My pleasure. Hope you enjoy whichever one you try.
