Very good YA fantasy! The adventures of Sabriel, an innocent young woman, and her run-ins with various types of dead, undead, once dead, sorta dead and should-be-dead people and creatures. Luckily for almost everyone concerned (except the forces of evil and the dead ones they control), Sabriel is by heritage and training a necromancer, with a fair amount of power over death. Unluckily, some of these once-dead and should-be-dead creatures have apparently killed Sabriel's father, the necromancer-in-chief or "Abhorsen," and are in the process of taking over the kingdom. It's up to Sabriel and her companions, a talking cat with mysterious powers and a once-sorta-dead (for 200 years) guy, to try to turn things around.

description

This is a well-written and enjoyable fantasy, occasionally a little on the grim and gruesome side, but still within the bounds of what I'd consider YA appropriate, at least for teens who aren't too sensitive. Garth Nix creates an intriguing and imaginative fantasy world.

This is also the first book in a series, but it doesn't leave you hanging off the edge of the virtual cliff. It works quite well as a stand-alone read. I haven't gotten around to reading the rest of the series, but they're on my "probably, sometime" mental list.

Content notes: Frequent battles with deadly creatures who sometimes resemble zombies. Some good characters die. The sexual content is very mild, but there's a scene where a character overhears lovemaking in the next room, and a somewhat *ahem* detailed description of a naked statue(view spoiler).

Carol Storm Great review! I loved the book, though I thought Sabriel was a little too in control at all times.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ Thanks, Carol! Have you read the rest of the series? I was wondering if this was originally intended as a stand-alone book; I think the second book wasn't published for 6 or 7 years.

Carol Storm No, I never read the other books, but if you're looking for something really good like SABRIEL I would recommend THE PERILOUS GARD by Elizabeth Marie Pope. It's an older book, but a classic!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ I love The Perilous Gard, and I also adore Elizabeth Pope's other book, The Sherwood Ring.

Carol Storm Me too! She was an amazingly talented author and it's a shame she wrote so few books.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ Carol, if you haven't read The Hollow Kingdom, you should try that when you're in the mood for another fantasy. It's one of my favorites and reminds me a little of these in its style. It's got a great main character.

Mayim de Vries I love Sabriel. I think that next to Howl's Moving Castle is one of the best YA fantasy books out there.

♥ Rebecca ♥ I read all 5 books and I thought the whole thing was great, and gets better as it goes on. I loved Lireal even more than Sabriel as a character. Although I found Clariel, which was a prequel, to be unnecessary. And I will check out the other books mentioned here. Always in search of more great YA fantasy.

Thanks, I'll put them on my TBR list. And you definitely should check out those other books mentioned in this thread; they're definitely worthwhile! I love good YA fantasies too.

Cecily Content advisory? My child read and loved this series aged ~9. Oh well, I don't think it damaged them.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ :D I read a lot of things I probably was a little too young for when I was a teen, as do probably most of us, but we survive. This one's pretty mild as far as that goes.

I just bought this book two hours ago, actually, because I knew that Goodreads had recommended it! :) I can't wait to start it!

Petra on hiatus but getting better.Happy New 2024! This is a really big seller for me, but I don't have the pretty cover.

That is a nice cover design, isn't it? I just checked it out from the library when I read it, but I wouldn't mind owning it.

Audrey The audio is narrated by Tim Curry, if you get a chance to check it out.
