3 LESSONS FOR THE LADS

brady_boys

Lesson #1: Don't Engage In Group-Think

Don't pile on! Don't be a bully! Get off of Twitter! Don't let the buzz of social media and the buzzing noises of all the voices in the world, from the news, from your peers' mouths, from your community's mouth... don't let that noise turn you into an automaton! Young man, you are an individual! Think for yourself!

Lesson #2: Don't Take Up So Much Space

Don't assume everyone wants to hear your loud male voice! Don't assume all of your thoughts, feelings, questions, and opinions need to be vocalized! And don't assume everyone wants to deal with all of your limbs spread out all over the place! Control yourself!

Don't be like these fellows:

Lesson #3: Don't Kill

Well, unless you are killing some kind of gross alien. If that's the case, then stab & chop & hack away - they probably deserve it!

Bonus Lesson/Trigger Warning: (view spoiler)

the writing is decent, the central concept is original, and I liked a couple of the lessons that Ness tried to teach. but when the narrative is all about stringing the reader along and the sole charismatic character is a talking dog, the book can't help but feel... less than inspiring?

Wendy Darling This makes me feel better for not having tried harder to get into this one.

:) Thanks! It was fun to write this & Shadow review basically side by side. Less fun to actually find positive lessons in the latter, but I soldiered on until the battle was won!

Not worth it, as far as my experience goes. I still do want to read his A Monster Calls.

A number of my GR friends wrote such compelling reviews that this one was prioritized. Not that I blame them of course, to each their own. But I really should have just listened to Dan 2.0 & Becky! So hard to figure out whose tastes I will be in alignment with when there are mixed reactions. I should always just prioritize the voices in my head instead.

carol. I totally empathize with everything you just said--some books have such mixed reviews among friends. Listening to the voices in my head works--unless they are arguing. 😁

mark monday I hate when they argue! I just wait until they sort it out themselves though, I'm no mediator.
