it was amazing
bookshelves: history

The detail with which this book deals with the Third Reich and the unspeakable evil that was Hitler's Germany is almost too much to take. Some of the discriptions, particularly towards the end of 'medical' experimentation, are simply too shocking and too challenging to read in one sitting. If you need to be reminded of just how evil the bastards in charge of Germany in the 30s and 40s really were then this is the book you need to read.

Like I said, the detail is mind-blowing - the story of this period of history still seems incomprehensible. I dare you not to be horrified by this remarkable book

Helen (Helena/Nell) Although that's one of your shortest reviews, it couldn't have been more effective in recruiting readers . . .

Helen (Helena/Nell) p.s. I've just ordered it.

Trevor I've just finished the section on Valkyrie and it is almost enough to make me go see the Tom Cruise film. What an amazing story! No wonder Hitler thought he was pretected by a special providence, it would be hard not to given the number of attempts on his life by people very close to him and his incredibly lucky escapes. To quote some minor Elizabethan playwright, "If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an improbable fiction".

Helen (Helena/Nell) Will report back when I've read it!

Eric_W I've read a lot about Shirer and have always meant to read this classic. Thanks for the prod.

Trevor The detail is truly remarkable, Eric. It is fascinating stuff

message 8: by Tony (new) - added it

Tony Hynes Trevor, what I learned from this book, and subsequent ones like it, is that just as much blame, ire, disgust, needs to be assigned to Heinrich Himmler, who masterminded the "final solution" logistics we know of today. Only a sociopath, could dream up and implement the horrors he passed down.

Abhishek Very well said, I am almost near the end, almost too much to take in

Trevor Just seeing these comments now, a decade later in some cases. This site is so annoying.
