This volume contains two novels (The Word for World is Forest, which I've separately read and reviewed, and The Telling, which I haven't read yet), some twelve short stories, and a number of essays and notes.
This two-volume collection of Le Guin Hainish works is a must-read for any fan of Le Guin or classic SF generally. The list price is $80, but for that money you're getting something like six novels, a bunch of short stories, and some really fascinating notes and commentary from Le Guin herself. So you're getting a lot of bang for your buck.
I received a copy of this collection from the publisher for review. Thank you!!...more

This Pulitzer Prize winning novel, a collection of interrelated short stories, has been on my TBR list for a long while. But the GR reviews are all over the map, from 1 star (boring, depressing) to 5 enthusiastic stars. And those are from friends and reviewers that I trust.

Le Guin's Hainish stories that I was lucky enough to be sent by a publicist (in hardback, yet!). It looks amazing! Publication date is Sept. 5, 2017.
I've only read a couple of Le Guin's novels before (The Word for World is Forest and the classic The Left Hand of Darkness), and both were longer ago than I care to tell. So I'm slowly working my way through this collection, which is going to take a while, because 2000! pages! Le Guin is a intelligent, thoughtful writer of SF with a dash of the mythic and fantastical. It's on the retro SF side of things, at least so far, which is understandable, since these first novels were published in the 1960's.

Cassandra is alone in a forest, in a place that looks like Earth but has longer days. For a while she manages to survive on her own, eating berries and such. And then the aliens find her...
I picked this up as a freebie a couple of years ago, read the first part and then, for whatever reason, it got sidelined unfinished. But it has some very enthusiastic reviews from some GR friends whose opinions I respect, so one of these times I'll give it another shot.

The only problem is I haven't read any of the books in this series, and I don't recall ever requesting this book. So, thanks, I guess?
Can anyone tell me a little about this series and its world? :D...more

"On hiatus" is a nice way of saying "this book was a DNF for me but I think I may go back and try to finish it sometime." If I didn't actually own this book, though, I'd probably just mark it DNF and give it up. When Sharon Shinn is on, she's a great fantasy author, but I'm finding that I don't care for everything she writes. Enough people like this that she's written at least 5 books in this series, so maybe it's just me....more

It's well written and richly imagined but the pace is rather slow, or "deliberate" if I'm being nice.
So I've been having some issues with this book (which is kind of embarrassing since I'm a moderator of the Mary Stewart GR group). I got about halfway through this book a few months back and then stalled out. It's been sitting under my bed since then while I've gotten busy with other books. I'm not quite ready to call this quits and label it a DNF, but it's on hold at least for now. I don't think I'm inclined to read the other books in this series. Mea culpa.
Original post: I read this so long ago, and remember it so little, that I would feel really guilty about giving it a star rating. But Mary Stewart was a very talented author and I like almost everything she wrote. One of these daysmonths years I'll try reading this one again....more
