Mrożek joined the Polish United Workers' Party during the reign of Stalinism in the People's Republic of Poland, and made a living as a political journalist.
In the late 1950s Mrożek begun writing plays. His first play, "Policja" (The Police), was published in 1958. Mrożek emigrated to France in 1963 and then further to Mexico. He traveled in France, England, Italy, Yugoslavia and other European countries. In 1996 he returned to Poland and settled in Kraków.
His first full-length play "Tango" (1964) – a family saga – is still along with "The Emigrants" (a bitter and ironic portrait of two Polish emigrants in Paris) his best-known work, and continue to be performed throughout the world. Director Andrzej Wajda made a theatre production of "The Emigrants" in 1975 at the Teatr Stary in Kraków. In 2006 Mrożek released his autobiography called "Baltazar".
Mrożek's works belong to the genre of Theatre of the Absurd, intended to shock the audience with non-realistic elements, political and historic references, distortion and parody.

In 1953, during the reign of Stalinism in Poland, Mrożek was one of several signatories of an open letter to Polish authorities participating in defamation of Catholic priests from Kraków, three of whom were condemned to death (but never executed) by the communist government after being groundlessly accused of treason.

Tango, Sławomir Mrożek
Tango is a drama about a contemporary society ruled by conformism, anarchy and a lack of attitudes.
The farce in a situation of complete confusion and decay is taken over and used by the authorities, that is, a strong and brutal boor. Tango is already a classic, the best known and most important piece by Sławomir Mrożek about social threats.
The play is set in a non-defined time in the home of Stomil and Eleonora, parents of Artur (student of medicine).
The place is disorganized not only in the way it is furnished, but also through the complete lack of house rules and common values. Everyone can do whatever they want.
In addition, many unneeded objects like baby carriage, old wedding dress, catafalque after Artur grandfather's death, can be found in there. It seems that "perplexity" may be the word that describes their lives best.
Despite that Artur’s attempts are bound to fail, he tries to make rules and grant some things meaning.
Artur tries to coax his grandmother to use catafalque, revolts against his father slovenliness and his mother’s double standard of morality.
He himself wants to have a traditional wedding, however he fails.
Artur when organising reception forgets about declaration of his feelings toward fiancee, so she thinks he’s indifferent and, in consequence, she claims she has an affair with Edek.
Furthermore, his grandmother dies, and Artur is killed by Edek.
Drama ends with tango that symbolizes simple, primitive, mass culture, which means those "values" won. Edek announces that he takes control over place and everyone has to follow his rules from now on.

- Taki wstyd w rodzinie! A ja marzyłam, że będzie artystą. Kiedy nosiłam go jeszcze w łonie, biegałam po lesie nago, śpiewając Bacha. Wszystko na nic."
Bardzo niekonwencjonalny, nieprzewidywalny dramat. Czytało mi się to naprawdę przyjemnie, powiedziałabym wręcz, że się wciągnęłam. Czuć było groteskę i niezłe riposty. Momentami widziałam przed oczami Ferdydurke. Pomimo momentami skomplikowanego tematu kilka razy się zaśmiałam i raz nawet emocjonalnie zaszkliły mi się łzy w oczach (wydaje mi się, że to akurat związane jest z moją osobistą wrażliwością). Książka krótka, ale mówi o ważnym temacie. Bardzo mi się podobała.

Książka przeczytana 29 marca 2016.
Moje wrażenia "na świeżo" są bardzo pozytywne, ale o pełną opinię pokuszę się dopiero wtedy, kiedy posłucham o "Tangu" w szkole i zaktualizuję ten wpis.

Okazuje się że dość dużo wyniosłem z książki :)
Właśnie to mi się w niej podoba! Najlepszy klasyk to taki, który w lekkim stylu, tekście który naprawdę dobrze się czyta potrafi zawrzeć trudną tematykę i dużo poważnej refleksji.
Tym sposobem "Tango", czyli ostatnia licealna lektura trafia do moich ulubionych "szkolnych" książek! :)

Jedna z bardzo nielicznych książek, przy których się zaśmiałam i jedyny dramat, który dla mnie jest lepszy w tej formie niż jako ewentualna proza. Uwielbiam i tę groteskę, i te mistrzowskie riposty, i bohaterów (no, oprócz Edka i Eugeniusza). Ulubiony dramat razem z Weselem.
P.S. Ciekawe czemu wyczuwam jakąś delikatną inspirację Ferdydurke.

In 1953, Sławomir Mrożek wrote an article that was published in the press urging the Polish government to carry out the death sentences decided by a Polish court for three priests convicted on false charges of treason. When asked about the affair later, Mrożek observed that had he lived in Germany during the 1930s he would have been a Hitlerite. However, despite his personal failings Mrożek was one of the great men of polish theatre for his era. His plays will be revived in Poland and taught at universities for years to come.
The text of the play that I read was in an English-language anthology of nine notable plays for the period from 1944 to 1975. Among the distinguished authors represented in this book were David Mamet, Tom Stoppard, Bertolt Brecht and two Nobel laureates (Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter). Mrożek in other words keeps distinguished company even outside of his native country.
Tango has the potential to enjoy a long posterity survive in the English- speaking world because it offers a superb example of the theatre of the absurd. It has uproariously weird characters and bizarre situations that violate the norms of conventional drama with the purpose of making the audience member wonder if life has any meaning. At the same it has excellent Shavian qualities presenting multiple sides of a philosophical debate in a manner guaranteed to provoke discussion among theatregoers at a café after a performance. The intrigue is very solid being taken from Molière's Tartuffe.
Tango presents a generational conflict between a father (Stomil) who believes in experimental art and personal life styles versus a son (Arthur) who wants to restore formalism in art and the actions of individuals in society. The debate is resolved by character named Eddie who penetrates the household like Tartuffe seducing first the father's wife and then the son's fiancée. Eddie appears to be a Bolshevik being working class, blunt and brutal. At the end he kills Arthur to thwart his counterrevolutionary plans, declares himself to be the head of the household and leaves the stage with Arthur's former fiancé on his arm.
In Tango Mrożek has certainly left the stage director with excellent material with which to stage an entertaining production. I personally will not be attending.

مسرحية تانجو للأديب العبثي البولندي سلافومير مروجيك
حين تصبح الفوضي هي النظام السائد، فإن كل محاولات تنظيم الفوضي هي إخلال بنظام الفوضي السائد بالفعل، أليس كذلك؟
مهلا ... ربما تكون الفكرة ملتوية بعض الشئ ، فامهلني لحظة ..
....
من المفترض ان النظام عكس الفوضي
ولكي يكون هناك نظام لابد أن تسبقه بعض الفوضي المؤقتة ..
فمثلا ربة المنزل حين ترغب في تنظيف المنزل، فلابد أن تزحزح الأثاث عن مكانة، وان تزيل المفروشات وتغسلها، وان تسكب المياة لتنظيف الأرضية .. وإذا دخلت المنزل وقت التنظيف فبالطبع ستجده في حالة فوضي، ولكنها فوضي مؤقتة حتي نصل للنظام والتنظيم .. وهي أيضا فوضي منظمة، فسيدة المنزل تعلم ماذا ستنظف اولا، وستغسل ماذا اولا .. وهكذا
احتفظ بهذه الصورة في ذهنك، ودعنا نذهب لمثال اخر ...
حسنا ... متي اخر مرة شاهدت دولابا للملابس غير مرتب؟؟؟

هنا ستفاجئ ان الفوضي المستمرة اصبحت هي نفسها نظاما ثابتا .. وإن محاولاتك أنت لترتيب نظام الفوضي، سيخلق خلخلة أو (دربكة) او لخبطة في نظام الفوضي نفسه .. فتصبح محاولات تنظيم الفوضي، هي احلال الفوضي في نظام الفوضي
عشان كدة لما تسمع حد يقولك انا لو رتبت دولابي ملقيش حاجتي، لكن كدة مفيش حاجة عندي بتضييع .. ارجوك مترتبهوش وتلخبطلي الدنيا
