2023 Highlights — Victorian Edwardian

I read a bunch of writing from the 1880s-1910 to keep my style/sensibilities/references right for my books (set in 1899), and I realised this is a literary epoque which I really enjoy. I discovered the yellowback novelist Richard Marsh and his marvellously entertaining book of short stories. I was surprised by how hard My Brilliant Career hit me — I’m so happy to discover this Australian classic f Read more of this blog post »

“All this time I’ve been wanting to learn how to cure diseases, and I’ve been completely ignoring the people who suffer from them.”
Christina Baehr, Drake Hall

“I began to wonder why I had ever thought I lived in a world without dragons.”
Christina Baehr

“I looked at the maimed dragon on her lap. Simon had taken it as a metaphor for his mother and her crushed hopes. But it could just as well be him. I wanted to cry. These families! Why did they go on doing this?”
Christina Baehr, Drake Hall

“But it is impossible, I find, to tidy books without ending by sitting on the floor in the middle of a great untidiness and reading.”
Elizabeth von Arnim, In the Mountains

“We shall have made such a blaze that men will remember us on the other side or the dark.”
Rosemary Sutcliff

“Many people think of our times as being the last before the end of the world. The evidence of horror all around us makes this seem possible. But isn't that an idea of only minor importance? Doesn't every human being, no matter which era he lives in, always have to reckon with being accountable to God at any moment? Can I know whether I'll be alive tomorrow morning? A bomb could destroy all of us tonight. And then my guilt would not be one bit less than if I perished together with the arth and the stars.”
Sophie Scholl

“He picked up one of the dead bats and covered it with his handkerchief. ‘Somebody’s mother,’ he murmured reverently.”
P.G. Wodehouse, Leave It to Psmith

“In me there is darkness,
But with You there is light;
I am lonely, but You do not leave me;
I am feeble in heart, but with You there is help;
I am restless, but with You there is peace.
In me there is bitterness, but with You there is patience;
I do not understand Your ways,
But You know the way for me.”

“Lord Jesus Christ,
You were poor
And in distress, a captive and forsaken as I am.
You know all man’s troubles;
You abide with me
When all men fail me;
You remember and seek me;
It is Your will that I should know You
And turn to You.
Lord, I hear Your call and follow;
Help me.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison
