I'm excited by geography, ancient history and mythology: in a nutshell, the romance of place! As a reader, I enjoy humour, action, nature, animals, and happy endings. Like most writers, I try to write the kind of book I like reading.

I'm also an aspiring permaculturist, and right now this takes up all my mind space. My heroes are natural farmers like Fukuoka and Bhaskar Save. Our farm is near the elephant corridor. This, along with our innocence in matters agricultural, makes for uncertain outcomes and a lot of adventures - in my head, at least. My farming blog is here: https://thelongview2016.wordpress.com/

After writing mainly fantasy, realistic dialogue is a challenge I really want to crack. I'm also fascinated by sibling relationships and want to explore them in the story. (less)

Valmiki Ramayana is here!

In July 2010, I embarked on a journey into the past. That journey is finally coming to an end, with the result being revealed this week. I am talking of the script for Amar Chitra Katha’s complete Valmiki Ramayana, in six volumes. It’s here!

The launch is in Bangalore on the 14th of October. Watch this space for more details!

Manny is on page 275 of 422 of Io Cleopatra. La regina ed il condottiero: It's such a bitch being a god empress. You need to take a portable throne with you for important voyages to foreign countries. And you can't sleep with a hunky absolute ruler without considering all the political consequences.

“Kashayam [was] a drink the vanaras had morning, noon and night, and a few times in between. It was a kind of brew with all kinds of herbs thrown in: the thick, sharp-tasting furry karpuravalli, the strong spicy tulsi, the slightly bitter bark of the coconut tree, pungent pepper roots, the breathcatching nellikai, the cool root of vetriver, and just about anything else that was considered edible. And some things that weren’t. In their craze for novelty, vanaras sometimes flung in new kinds of leaves or berries just because they smelt interesting; whole families had been known to fall ill, or even die. Gind’s family were not a very adventurous lot, and stuck to things they knew not to be poisonous. Still, every day’s kashayam was different, and this was a great topic of conversation among the vanaras.”
Harini Gopalswami Srinivasan, Gind: The Magical Adventures of a Vanara

“Novels and gardens," she says. "I like to move from plot to plot.”
Bill Richardson, Bachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast

“Oh, is that my report, father? said Mike, with a sort of sickly interest, much as a dog about to be washed might evince in his tub.”
P. G. Wodehouse

“A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot!
Rose plot,
Fringed pool,
Ferned grot--
The veriest school
Of peace”
Thomas Edward Brown

“The only calibration that counts is how much heart people invest, how much they ignore their fears of being hurt or caught out or humiliated. And the only thing people regret is that they didn't live boldly enough, that they didn't invest enough heart, didn't love enough. Nothing else really counts at all.”
Ted Hughes, Letters of Ted Hughes

“There is no happiness for him who does not travel, Rohita!
Thus we have heard. Living in the society of men, the best man becomes a sinner… therefore, wander!… The fortune of him who is sitting, sits; it rises when he rises; it sleeps when he sleeps; it moves when he moves. Therefore, wander!”
Aitareya Brahmanan in the Rigveda

Harini Gopalswami Srinivasan Thanks, Shobana! Whose daughter is she, and what's her name? I remember Vasudha, Sujan and Sunita very well. I'll gladly send her the other two books if you think she would enjoy them. Let me know.

Shobana Ramkumar was able to purchase balakand and gind on flipcart for my grand niece. vanuvati and zoo duck are not available. hope she likes them, she is quite small and can read a bit by herself. But i would love to read these two with her - maybe one chapter at a time.
