"Very well constructed fantasy with a ton of worldbuilding done organically. Alas, I actually wouldn't have minded a little more telling, and a little more connection to the characters. I ended up enjoying the flashbacks more than the contemporary sto" Read more of this review »

Justin Richards
“That,’ said Benny, ‘is about as convincing an argument as the works of those historians who claim there was a fifth Teletubby.”
Justin Richards, The Medusa Effect

Charles Stross
“You wouldn’t believe the scope for mischief that the Beast of Redmond unintentionally builds into its Office software by letting it execute macros that have unlimited access to the hardware. I remember a particular post-prandial PowerPoint presentation where I was one of only two survivors (and the other wasn’t entirely human). However, this is the first time I’ve seen a Word document eat a man’s soul.”
Charles Stross, Equoid

“Call it the Jar Jar Binks Effect. Call it “Yes, George R.R. Martin is My Bitch” Syndrome. Call it whatever, it’s that abiding ire at something you’ve delighted in betraying you, as it seems, simply by ceasing to delight. It’s the frustration at that thing not being what it once was, not being what it could still be or might become again. It’s the investment of imagination turned sour.”

“Here’s a story I heard: somewhere there was a transgender woman trying to explain her transition to a geeky-but-otherwise-clueless friend. Nothing she tried could really convey what she was going through to him, until she described it in terms he could grasp. “It’s like I’m the Doctor,” she said. “Except I’m regenerating into a woman.” His eyes lit up. He got it then.”

Ann Leckie
“Translator Dlique was saying, very earnestly, “Eggs are so inadequate, don’t you think? I mean, they ought to be able to become anything, but instead you always get a chicken. Or a duck. Or whatever they’re programmed to be. You never get anything interesting, like regret, or the middle of the night last week.”
Ann Leckie, Ancillary Sword
