The best way to get credits is to deliver Scrap to recycle stations.
These are mainly found as loot, but you can also Vaporize items carried in your inventory (only some have this option). The better the item, the more Scrap you can get. For example, dismantling a damaged firearm taken from an opponent will net you at least several pieces of Scrap.

Bring your scrap to recycle stations. There is at least one recycle station on each deck of The Citadel and found stations are marked on your map.
After interacting with a station, move your scrap to the left slots and then press the green button.

For every 10 pieces of Scrap, you receive 1 Tri-Credit. They emerge from the slot on the right and make sure to always collect all of the output.
Credits as loot

Tri-Credits are also found during exploration - they may be in plain sight or at the bodies of killed employees or defeated opponents. Unfortunately, found currency most of the time is in single digits.
Spending Credits

Credits should be mainly spent on weapon modifications i.e. through visting Mod-Kit Stations. Each mod improves the corresponding weapon, increasing e.g. its damage dealt or lowering overheating.
Most upgrades cost 25 credits, and make sure to always have at least this amount of currency in supply. This will allow you to buy an upgrade as soon as you encounter a Mod-Kit Station.

If you're playing on the highest difficulty, also consider buying consumables at vending machines. Extra medicine items will always come in handy.
When playing on a lower difficulty, consumables gathered as loot should be enough to keep you going.
