Farming Simulator 22: What are the differences between subsoilers, harrows, plows? FS 22 guide, tips

Every field needs to be tilled before you can plant or sow on it. In Farming Simulator 22, you have four types of machinery that you can use to cultivate a field, but they differ not only in the speed at which they operate, but also in how the field looks after using them.

Last update: 31 May 2024

From this page of the guide you will learn how the available methods of soil treatment differ in Farming Simulator 22 depending on the machines used: plows, spaders, cultivators, subsoilers and harrows. You will learn the differences in their speed, the amount of stones generated and the applications for the given works.

Stats comparison

First of all, we will compare the main features of the machines divided by their technical specifications, as shown in the table below (it does not include DLC machines).

Machine

Maximum speed

Scope of work

Required tractor power

Plow

12 km/h

<6m

High, about 200-300 hp

Cultivator

15 km/h

Even >15m

Average, from 100 to 500 hp for the largest machines

Disc harrows

18 km/h

>10m

Low, from 100 to 300 hp

Power harrows

12 km/h

<6m

Very low, about 100 hp

Subsoilers

12 km/h

<8m

Low (100 hp) for smaller models

Spaders

8 km/h

<4.5 m

Low, 100-200 hp

Note that additional machines can be found in the store categories - seeders/planters, as well as in the section for fertilizing machines.

Generating stones

Spaders dig out a mass of different sizes of stones. - Farming Simulator 22: What are the differences between subsoilers, harrows, plows? - FAQ - Farming Simulator 22 Guide
Spaders dig out a mass of different sizes of stones.

The types of devices, according to the table, differ mainly in speed/area of work. In addition, machines other than plows also allow you to fertilise/sow at the same time, depending on the model chosen. However, an important parameter is the number of stones generated. The number and size of the stones dug out on the field depends on the machine used and decreases with the following order (decreasing):

  1. Spaders
  2. Plows,
  3. Cultivators,
  4. Harrows and subsoilers.

To sum up: if you want to get a lot of stones, for example, to additionally sell them, use a spader. If you do not want to bother with stones that can not be hammered into the ground during rolling, use harrows or subsoilers.

Additional features of the plow

The biggest drawback, which discourages the use of plows every time, is the low speed and small width of the machine, as well as the inability to simultaneously fertilize or sow the field.

1 - Farming Simulator 22: What are the differences between subsoilers, harrows, plows? - FAQ - Farming Simulator 22 Guide
  1. They are the only ones that allow you to create or expand fields.
  2. They allow to increase the yield by 15% (only for plants: beets, potatoes, reeds, corn, sunflowers).
  3. They prevent/slow down the appearance of weeds.
  4. Only a plow will allow you to get rid of the stubble field made out of dead plants.
Some plows (Kverneland brand) have an additional overlay - packomat - which allows you to level the plowed field during work - Farming Simulator 22: What are the differences between subsoilers, harrows, plows? - FAQ - Farming Simulator 22 Guide

Some plows (Kverneland brand) have an additional overlay - packomat - which allows you to level the plowed field during work. However, this does not affect the quality of crops, but only improves the aesthetics of the field.
