Samsung is pushing a new update to the LTE variants of the Galaxy Watch 5 series. It appears to be the same update that Bluetooth-only Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro picked up last month. Rolling out with the firmware build number R9*5FXXU1AWDA, the latest release brings the skin temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking feature. The new feature is available through the Samsung Health app, which will also automatically update to the latest version once you install the new firmware release on your Galaxy Watch 5.
The latest update for the Galaxy Watch 5 series also brings a new security patch. Samsung isn’t pushing the latest monthly release, though. The two smartwatches are getting last month’s patch. The Bluetooth variants also picked up the April security patch. Google has already updated the Pixel Watch to the May release, so Samsung is lagging here. That said, the Korean firm never pushes monthly security patches to its Wear OS smartwatches, so it isn’t entirely surprising. The Galaxy Watch 5 series may never get the May security update.
Apart from these two changes, the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro don’t appear to be getting anything notable with this update. Samsung’s official changelog mentions improved system stability and reliability, but you may not notice any major improvements to performance. If you’re using the LTE variants of either of these Galaxy smartwatches, the new update should be available to you soon. We can confirm that the rollout is live in some countries in Europe and Asia. A wider release should be just around the corner.
As usual, you will get a notification once a new software update is available for your Galaxy Watch 5 LTE or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro LTE. You can also manually check for updates on the watch, though. Open the Settings app, scroll down and enter the Software update menu, and tap on Download and install. This can be done through the Watch settings page on the companion Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone as well.
Samsung is readying more temperature-based features for the Galaxy Watch 5
The Galaxy Watch 5 is Samsung’s first smartwatch equipped with a temperature sensor. However, the infrared-based sensor served no purpose to users out of the box. This menstrual cycle tracking feature is the first use of the hardware and it came nearly eight months after the watches hit the market. But the company is just getting started. It recently confirmed that more temperature-based features are in the pipeline for its latest smartwatches. It may debut a few with the Galaxy Watch 6 series later this year. The new watches may arrive in late July.
