Writing a weekly column is risky because it comes with a big opportunity cost of time and energy. I'm very grateful to those who read, comment and share it. If no one reads what I write, then I'm failing professionally. LI and other #social media are powerful platforms to promote our content but it's wrong to equate them with 'media owners' which bear risk by creating original content. Should platforms do more to support content creators instead of only pay them on ad-revenue share and claiming they are "substitutable?" My column this week for The Media Leader UK asks you to think about how important risk is to the business of #media. The automation and professionalisation of creating content and buying #advertising has made us much more uncomfortable with risk. Media needs a healthy amount of risk to survive in the long-term. It's always dangerous to predict the unpredictable so at least I didn't go for an England win in my latest musings for The Media Leader UK What I did do, more safely, was to compare how 'Big TV' is emulating the soon-to-be Sir Gareth Southgate in rebuilding a way of working with a blend of existing and new talent, a new formation and new tactics and techniques to reflect the change in consumer habits and also crucially marketing techniques such as Commerce Media. TV is evolving. There will always be a Spain to contend with media-wise but England showed that humility, hard work and a new approach to teamwork can get results and lead to a reappraisal (and, yes, a bit of luck is important, too). Thanks to Kelly Williams and Sameer Modha for insights into ITV's transition.

Telcos have all this data about #TV audiences, including what people are streaming on their phones, why aren't they doing more measurement themselves? That's exactly what Liberty Global board member Andrew Cole wants to do via a new company he's created. He is very critical of existing JIC/measurement systems based on panels - in our latest The Media Leader UK podcast I've tried to get to the bottom of why advertisers and #media buyers would want to deviate from a trusted system like Barb which has been in place for over 40 years. Cole was also an original backer of GB News and you better believe I had questions for him about that too. Douglas Whelpdale, Barb’s head of insight, thought this trend of a spike late in a match “seems probable” — for bigger games, at least.
