ABOUT DRM-Free and Client-Free Games

An ever-growing list of DRM-free and client-free Steam games, for and by Steam users

http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

Every game listed here can be run without the Steam client running or even being installed anymore after the game is downloaded. In these cases, Steam is used as the method of distribution and nothing else; the games are essentially portable programs once they're on your hard drive. These particular games have no restrictions whatsoever, and can be copied/pasted to any number of machines and external hard drives or flash drives and played without any network connections present at all. You can bring them to friends' houses, public libraries, college campuses, etc., and never worry about being online or logged into any accounts.

The purpose of this group is to make players aware of the games that don't have any network dependency, the games that they will never have to fear losing in the future due to server issues, end of support, or companies going out of business. This group was originally a topic on the GOG forums, but GOG started shutting down a lot of topics for whatever reason, so I decided to move everything here, to the source.

The best way to test to see if a game is completely DRM-free is to download it through Steam on one machine, move it to an external drive, and try to run that same game on a different machine that doesn't have Steam installed on it. I understand that this isn't going to be an option for a lot of people, so it's also usually sufficient to temporarily rename the main Steam installation folder (so the client can't launch) and fully disable your internet connection on your computer. At that point, if the game starts and you can play it, you can safely say that it's DRM- and client-free.

If you discover a game that's not on the list, leave a comment in the pinned discussion topic and I'll add it to the wiki page whenever I can. Let's all work together for PC game preservation!

Another reason that I've found is that a game is sometimes just more convenient if you're playing on something like a Steam Deck. Having all of Steam's features, like cloud saves, available on the go is fantastic.

A lot of the time, you can't get certain games anywhere other than Steam, or the Steam versions of certain games are updated more frequently than places like GOG.

As far as redownloading Steam games after you delete them, you can do that an unlimited number of times; the game stays in your library. You could always specifically request that Valve remove a game from your library, but in that regard, it wouldn't be any different from doing that on any other website.

Yeah, but why buy a DRM free game on steam vs somewhere else? You still can’t remove the game from steam. And if you delete the game and try to redownloaded, can’t.
