honestly it's a great game and my first ever resident evil experience
story is gripping and the game is spooky enough to not just become a weird third person action game which the RE3 remake kinda did in my opinion

After the success of Resident Evil 7, with the refinements to the graphics engine (RE Engine), Capcom now intends to apply technological innovations to the well-known Resident Evil 2. The game receives a new look through a modern redesign and revamp, bringing it to a future prompted by the highest quality visual aesthetic. Instead of switching the old format from console to console, the developers opted to re-make the game. With this, it suggests the most troubling reason, since it's the apex of the era of remakes. It could well be that, as a consequence, a remake occurs when quality is dictated by technology, elevating it above creativity and originality. Or disguising the lack of creativity and inspiration for a new story. However, is the game really a work worthy of recognition when there is a crisis of creativity? Or is it a really overrated game? I will comment on the favourable aspects of the game.

The story is as follows: Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield head to the city of Raccoon City. Leon hits the road with the desire to work for the first time in the police department, while Claire attempts to look for her brother, Chris. On their way in different vehicles, they converge at the gas station. However, they're surprised by the citizens turned into living dead. The protagonists flee immediately from the scene until they're about to make it to the police station, where they get stranded in the congested streets cluttered with vehicles and undead. Likewise, they're about to be surrounded when a heavy truck charges against them. This releases them but splits them; Leon and Claire head to the police station as their rendezvous point. This is how they take action to find out what is happening, and, as survivors, they attempt to get out of this situation.


Based on general opinion, it's stated that the remake game is “faithful” to the original. This presupposes two issues. Most gamers know and have played a classic survival horror game (Resident Evil, in this case). But if not everyone knows about it, then there must be potential players in the future. For new players who are aware of the latest technological developments, they must try a classic. The remake is also intended for new players. Capcom decided to bring back a classic, but without porting it. Instead, it developed a remake of its previous structure. So that both veteran and new players would consent to the remake, the developers sought a balance between video and gameplay. In this way, it's possible to notice that there is painstaking work in the film quality and the well-known gameplay. Even though it's been modernized, it’s still Resident Evil, and it's almost intact.

It is true that the graphics engine (RE Engine) affords the game a realistic look. The scenes become atmospheric (dark, opaque, cloudy, and dimly lit), proposing a feeling of trepidation. The characters (the actors) are detailed, which is evident in their facial expressions coupled with the textures of their entire aspects. Besides, the game tends to be a third-person experience. Combined with footage, although with careless photography, it attempts to adhere to a cinematographic format (dramatic and realistic “film”, although more graphic than narration), as if we were watching a TV series. However, the characters and enemies are more intricate, making gore the essence of the game. But not all gore means realism. Realism is inherent not in the objects but in the narrative. Withdrawing the characters and enemies, the scenarios have their logical order in the things put there, but at the same time, they tend to be almost devoid. It isn't that feeling of loneliness, but merely as objects. There are indie horror games that showcase this same object quality when the narrative is too flimsy to convey anything. Technology did its part by providing graphic object quality, but not the narration above the object.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is a sightseeing thrill, but at the same time, there is not much to take in. This presupposes a comparison between both games, new and old. Given that there is no creation of a story, it only has to be rearranged through reinvention. As we know, the story of the game is simple, always encompassing the unfathomable realm (or lore) of the ineffable. In the remake, transparent scenes are laid out, whereas before, in the old version, the player had to assume, imagine, or believe. They don't look at it directly. That provided it with an enigmatic feeling. Now the players demand clarity and coherence so that everything is displayed before their eyes. This remake does it, demoing it all with an accuracy that mutilates the original narrative. Thus, it produces an atmosphere of terror that is gratifying to the eye in a fluidly uninterrupted manner.


The game is a reinvention. The proposal preserved the internal structure of survival-type intact. Plain and simple, every supply is essential. Since it's a survival-type game, with a terror atmosphere, it's not necessary to carry out the plot by means of shooting. This is the substance of the game, the survival, something that stands almost unaltered regardless of implements (accessories or utensils such as grenades or hip pouches) and improvements (in terms of applied technology) that ensure the consistency of the gameplay. The player can go according to the pace and method, for example speedruns, evading or surviving without saving the game.

The technology brings its benefits at the time of combat, as well as an improvement for the enemy's AI. It offers the "realistic" feature as a result of the graphics engine. The realism happens in the gameplay. Although, it will result in some narrative inconsistencies. On the other hand, the developers did an excellent synthesis in the scenarios. Some were re-established, removed, and blended. In that way, the game was accurate to the original in terms of survival substance, but changed some things to lend it that fluidity and congruence. But the distinctive elements were conserved (i.e., objects in the setting, identity of rooms or some puzzles and others disappearing), although the soundtrack is terrible, which conjures up an eerie nostalgia when the player is involved in the plot.

Since an extra drama was introduced as a TV series, new scenes are watched that escape the spectator's view. Some are old scenes as such, while others were completely recreated. This achieved features a varied rhythm. Some are unpublished, it injects a bubbly tinge to the game. However, not everything is spot-on. The story can be played with any of the characters. The differences in sides are barely distinguishable. Instead of having four distinct stories, they only boil down to two: Either Claire or Leon. So the player can perform from the beginning with whatever it wants without giving importance to the parallel stories, what transpires on each side of the character.


I would love to write a critical essay about remakes. For the moment, this is a general feedback. So I prefer to play the old version, as Capcom achieved incomparable originality in the first Resident Evil 2. However, in the current DLCs, they're effort sold. Now with money, we can consume it. It is an overrated product. I think there are better games inspired by Resident Evil or Silent Hill. If it's worth it, it's well-worth it for potential new players, that is, the game is for the future. Someday we'll watch a remake of the remake.

First of all, the graphics and atmosphere are really nice, the areas are very well designed.

There are three things that annoy me:

1. The enemies can take a lot of headshots, it feels like you're shooting a sponge -> bullet sponge.

2. You constantly have to run away from Mr. X, which isn't scary, it's just annoying, you can stun him but you can't kill him.

3. To progress, you wander through the building like a castle ghost to find the right items + point 2 above.

Personally, I didn't like the way the second part played and I like the gameplay of parts 4, 5 and 6 more, but overall I can still recommend it.
