Being the global powerhouse that it is, Lego has been expanding its sets to represent a myriad of cultures from all over the world. Its Lunar New Year offerings for the past decade are the most consistent of all.

With every new year represented by a zodiac animal, Lego has offered some sort of buildable homage to the featured animal, as well as more slice-of-life sets that showcase the various ways celebrations are held during this time of the year.

There are also Lego sets that are perfect for any occasion, such as the Botanical Collection, which allows you to create Lego-style plants and flowers as decorations.

For this Lunar New Year, IGN Southeast Asia got the chance to check out four phenomenal Lego sets that are perfect for the Year of the Dragon.

Long Long Beast

The true centrepiece of the year, Lego’s Auspicious Dragon set presents a mighty Chinese dragon made out of red, teal, and gold-accented pieces. Sitting on a bed of clouds and rock, this is one of Lego’s most stellar zodiac animals yet.

The clever use of angular pieces while maintaining the curvature of the dragon’s silhouette is definitely what makes this set stand out. While it is primarily a statuette, it features ball joints in its limbs for those who want to create a different pose for the dragon.

While Lego has created ferocious dragons for their Ninjago line, this classical Chinese dragon is one of their best yet.

The Fated Gathering

Lunar New Year’s Eve is never complete without a reunion dinner, and that is exactly what the Family Reunion Celebration set captures impeccably. This three-storey Chinese restaurant is packed to the brim with the tiniest of details.

From a dinner table with a lazy susan to the restaurant featuring a karaoke set and aquarium, everyone has been to this type of Chinese restaurant at least once in their lifetimes. Putting together these small details can be a little finicky, but it’s worth it for the aesthetic.

It’s also great that the mini-figures come with smartphones and ang paos, with the set having more than enough figures to recreate your very own family.

Chap Goh Mei Additions

This year’s Valentine’s Day overlaps with the fifteen days of the Lunar New Year celebrations, culminating in the Chinese Valentine’s Day known as Chap Goh Mei. So, while they aren’t exactly Lunar New Year Lego sets, these two sets make for great gifts for the occasion.

First, there’s the Flowers in Watering Can Lego Creator set, which can also be recreated into two other configurations. As decorations, this set adds a pop of colour to any home and is also easy enough for younger children to build all by themselves.

For fans of Lego’s Botanical Collection, the Cherry Blossoms set is a true marvel. With two long stalks of pink and white, they make for versatile decorations around the house. Building it is a meticulous process, but it definitely inspires you to buy a few to display around your home.
