This is one strong donghua, and is definitely a worthy entry in adult animation. It starts out kind of slow, and I thought it was going to be purely an episodic adventure. But it's not. Space Battleship Yamato is one of the most important sagas in the history of anime. However, its success was not immediate, and it took several re-runs and especially the release of this film in theaters for it to truly become the cult icon we know today. This film is actually just a recap of the original 1974 series (and therefore a montage of sequences from the series). Its sole purpose is to offer the same story but condensed into just over two hours. For this review, I will focus not on the ... story of the original series, which is great, but simply on whether the film fulfills its role as a summary.

The movie begins quite well with a first quarter that takes its time (although it's obviously a bit rushed compared to the series, but it's reasonable) and the context is well set. As for the ending, the film also does well, retaining all the important aspects of the series to deliver a satisfying and memorable finale. In these two parts, the movie succeeds and manages to transpose the events of the show effectively.

The problem lies in the second quarter of the movie. For some reason, almost all the subplots taking place in the solar system are included, but the film lacks time, so these scenes are rushed and often summarized by a narrator, leaving us with just a three-minute action scene for the spectacle. Not only does this not work in execution, but honestly, these are not very important scenes that could mostly have been cut to allow the film to develop more significant elements (or focus on just one of these subplots, like the one on Jupiter to introduce the Wave Motion Gun, and do it properly). Condensing 26 episodes into two hours means not dwelling on such things... but the film tries anyway. In this case, drastic choices need to be made, and unfortunately, I guess they didn't make the right ones in this segment, which penalizes the entire movie as it has to rush through important elements.

In the end, we have a movie that struggles to exist on its own. Watching it, you feel like you're just watching a simple summary, and it doesn't do much to hide it. Due to certain choices made, the film fails to convince us that it could have been a standalone film. Yet, I don't think it was impossible to achieve, and that's my main criticism of the film. I think there was a better way to do it, even without making a completely new film like what was done with Galaxy Express 999.

However, this film still has some merits, simply because 26 episodes can be long. For someone who has already seen the series and just wants to refresh their memory, it does the job perfectly. Similarly, for someone curious about the saga but lacking the patience to watch such an old anime in its entirety, it is also a reasonable alternative. Moreover, the film is far from being truly bad. You follow the story with pleasure, and the experience is not unpleasant at all. The music alone manages to carry the film and brings a real epic feel that saves the viewer's immersion despite the flaws I've mentioned.

Space Battleship Yamato est l'une des sagas les plus importantes de l'histoire de la japanimation. Pour autant, son succès n'a pas été instantané et il a fallu attendre plusieurs rediffusions et surtout la sortie de ce film au cinéma pour qu'elle devienne vraiment l'icône culte que l'on connaît aujourd'hui. Ce film n'est en réalité qu'un récapitulatif de la série originale de 1974 (et donc un montage de séquences de la série). Son seul but est de proposer la même chose, mais sur un peu plus de deux heures seulement. Pour cette critique, je vais surtout juger non pas l'histoire de la série originale, qui est géniale, mais tout simplement la question de savoir si le film remplit bien son rôle de résumé.

Le film commence plutôt bien avec un premier quart qui prend le temps qu'il faut (encore que c'est évidemment un peu rapide par rapport à la série, mais c'est raisonnable) et le contexte est bien mis en place. Pour ce qui est de la fin, là aussi le film s'en sort bien et garde tout ce qui est important de la série pour apporter un final aussi satisfaisant que mémorable. Au niveau de ces deux parties, le film s'en sort bien et parvient à transposer les événements de la série.

Le problème se trouve plutôt au niveau du deuxième quart du film. Pour une raison que j'ignore, à peu près toutes les sous-intrigues se passant dans le système solaire sont incorporées, mais le film manque tellement de temps que fatalement ces passages sont expédiés et bien souvent résumés par un narrateur, ne nous laissant que la scène d'action de trois minutes pour le spectacle. Déjà dans l'exécution, cela ne fonctionne pas, mais surtout, honnêtement, ce sont des passages pas si importants qui pouvaient être coupés pour la plupart afin que le film gagne en rythme et puisse se permettre de développer des éléments bien plus importants (ou bien de se concentrer sur une seule de ces sous-intrigues, comme celle à Jupiter pour introduire le Wave Motion Gun, et de le faire vraiment proprement). En condensant 26 épisodes en deux heures, on ne peut pas s’attarder sur ce genre de choses, mais le film essaie quand même. Dans ce genre de cas, il faut faire des choix drastiques et malheureusement, selon moi, ils n'ont pas pris les bons sur ce segment, ce qui pénalise tout le film qui doit aller très vite sur des éléments importants.

Au final, on se trouve avec un film qui peine à exister par lui-même. En le regardant, on sent qu’on regarde un simple résumé et il ne fait pas grand-chose pour le dissimuler. À cause de certains choix qui ont été faits, le film n'arrive pas à nous faire croire qu'il aurait pu être un véritable film fonctionnant par lui-même. Pourtant, je ne crois pas que c'était impossible à réaliser, c'est là mon reproche au film. Je pense qu’il y avait mieux à faire même sans parler de faire un film complètement nouveau comme avec Galaxy Express 999.

Cependant, ce film a tout de même certains intérêts, tout simplement parce que 26 épisodes, ça peut être long. Pour quelqu’un qui a déjà vu la série et qui veut juste se rafraîchir la mémoire, il fera parfaitement l'affaire. De même, pour quelqu’un de curieux vis-à-vis de la saga mais n’ayant pas la patience de voir un aussi vieil anime en entier, il constitue également une alternative raisonnable. D'autant que le film est loin d'être réellement mauvais pour autant. On suit l'histoire avec plaisir et l'expérience n'est pas du tout désagréable. La musique parvient à elle seule à porter le film et à apporter un véritable souffle épique qui sauve l'immersion du spectateur malgré les maladresses que j'ai citées.

Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha II (Part 2) - Silver Link, just stop. Nothing that you do will ever restore the series to its former glory.

Let's not sugarcoat this show, shall we? Novelist Shu's Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha is actually a decent series. However, the anime enters in a literal exercise in frustration in trying to flesh out the bigger sum of the picture: the Selection Judgement, in its many arcs, being a larger-than-life story than the easy-going Season 1, which was very straightforward and simple to digest. Make no mistake, it's not the anime's fault for going into a rather complicated plot with Season 2, ... it's written that way to begin with, that if you ask me, no amount of anime or movie-length shows (a la Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer) style is EVER enough to understand what the hell's going on.

With Part 2 covering Volumes 5 and 6 of the LN, I'd be very surprised if the anime adaptation was ever the sole cause to blame for all the mismanagement that's borne from Aniplex trying to push more of the "greatness" that is the Misfit of Demon King Academy. Of course, Anos the VoldiGOAT continues to flex his misfit powers against all that tries to obliterate him and his purpose of throwing kingdoms and empires on their toes, he's literately the sole influence of his followers since the very beginning, and the series WILL make sure that amidst all of the jumbled mess of content, Anos is still king, and any problem is instantaneously wiped off with the swagger and lifting of his hands.

Sadly, just when I want to hope that Part 2 will be an improvement over last Winter's rather miserable quality amidst a rather convoluted story for Part 1 of Season 2, this season is even worse, and it rubs it in your face that it's a show that has not just clearly lost its luster, but of any quality and substance that's left to tell. The decision to go full-on 3DCG for action scenes (especially the dragons), it's not just NOT executed well, but why do the animators even care at this point when it has already fallen off so badly and given the lesser care of its other currently focused "sibling" of Yozakura-san Chi no Daisakusen a.k.a Mission: Yozakura Family, which is at least on par with what Silver Link has done on the production side, if they ever cared to begin with.

Simply put, what we got here with Part 2 was a story that is already barely on the brink of understanding since Part 1, with character writing so obnoxious that Anos can just carry the show by himself, coupled with rather bad (to the tandem line of horrible) animation, and an OP/ED pairing that just...frankly, sucks. I genuinely have sympathy for the animators who feel like they shot themselves on the foot trying to bring Shu's story to life, but it's just the simple matter of complications that slowly, but surely, overwhelm the anime, and rightfully so that audience retention rates continue to dwindle.

Stop, just stop, and get some help. The suffering for Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha a.k.a The Misfit of Demon King Academy, ENDS NOW, for a fall from grace that hits harder than thou of its offerings that hast gone away for good.

Is what can be best described as when it comes to this show. While also being a semi realistic take on VTubers, and VTubing as a whole. As VTubers come in all shapes and sizes. I say semi realistic too, as it's not 100% of what and how VTubing is like or goes. But it's certainly a very close enough take, that it almost feels like it is. Who put their all into VTubing, Much like the characters presented within the show do too. If that's not a realistic take on VTubing, and VTubers, I'm not sure what is.

Art and sound: 8
I'll go into a certain part of this in full detail, as it's a neat touch that really sends it home. But what the product looks in general, is very well animated, and drawn. Not to mention of how it sounds, as if too, every single VA not only gave it their all, but had a blast while doing such scene by scene. As Is said in the story, but it fits here too, it's as if they really did a big deep dive into the subject matter, and actually looked to see how VTubers are like, how they sound, the works. Attention to detail has been taken in very carefully here, and it shows.

What one touch that I really dug, was within episode 3, which really highlighted how the show works. By that I mean not actively showing them outside their personas. After all, some have characters, some have an extended versions of themselves. Or really, all of it IS ourselves. It's what we either SEE OURSELVES as. Or would WANT to be. So for this show, to only show the 'persona' and never their look outside of their models, is a neat touch. They escaped the wage slave, escaped a forced version of themselves, and they can truly be THEM. Which is shown through it's presentation. Great stuff.

Honestly. What an actual good solid show for VTubing. Go watch it now.

This point is where the show completely falls off. The previous seasons and the movie are generic in a lot of ways but entertaining enough to keep watching, this season however is pathetc.
First I will get the obvious out of the way and acknowledge the undeniable drop in animation quality, but beyond that the story and characters become incomprehensibly bad. The most succint way I can describe this without giving specifc spoilers is that there is a character whose allegiance is all over the place, they are double agents, no wait, they are triple agents, no wait, they are back to double agents, no ... wait, they are now openly loyal to one side oh wait, no they aren't.

This is already handled extremely poorly and it is made a million times worse by the fact that it is effectively never addressed, all parties involve ed in this season are aware of this characters constant back stabbing and fickle "loyalty" yet for somreason never do anything about it and every single other character in the show allows this character to freely walk around their base and interact with them like they are good friends and they hadn't fought tooth and nail trying to help a depraved, perverted "scientist" do horrific experiments on children. It is so painfully stupid, having a traitor could have easily been a great angle to take but the way it is handled here with nobody caring about the perpetual betrayals, nobody treating the person any different, none of their actions having any consequences means it is all utterly pointless, none of it goes anywhere, has any weight or significance to it, it is the most anticlimactic way to incorporate a "twist" humanly possible.

I will take a moment to point out this review focuses largely on events surrounding one character because that is what this season primarily revolves around, however believe it or not I am trying to keep this brief but there are so many things about this season that are bad, some subjective but mostly objective that it is difficult to even scratch the surface without turning this into a dissertation, apologies for that, but it is fair to say most of the main characters are handled poorly. The power scaling is a mess, even as far as shounen go it is inconsistent and there are dialogue/inner mononlogues that make no sense because they are questioning things they themselves first hand experienced, it is as if the events of the final episodes of season 1 have been retconned and the show is only now trying to build to stuff that was revealed all the way back in 2011.

Lastly, again without outright spoiling specifics, as you know from the synopsis this season introduces another powerful organization, however nothing about this organization makes sense, the being who is in charge of it and the goal they are striving towards is directly contradicted by the rest of the organization being manned by humans. Which makes the above mentioned traitor angle even more sloppy because it means there is zero, literally zero reason for their betrayal, their whole "personality", the one thing driving them is their own survival and they go about this by betraying people they trust to work with an organization they can't trust and who are actively trying to destroy, how can it even be argued that that makes sense?

I finished this season out of curiosity and read a little bit of what comes next in the story and jesus wept somehow the impossible happens and it gets worse and dumber beyond this point, like I said despite being relatively generic I liked the show before this point but this season, it's "story", it's inconceivably poor handling of a twist involving recoginzable characters and it's ignoring of scenes in earlier seasons is all objectively bad writing. I can't in good conscience recommend this and I for one won't be watching any more of this going forward.

I first watched Tehnolyze almost 5 years ago and I thought it was a masterpiece, so I gave it a 10 and had it on my favorites for a very long time.

Many rewatches later, I still hold appreciation for the show; there'll never be another "Texhnolyze". It's very unique in many ways, and the slow (but necessary) pacing helps filter out the casual audience, which only helps to make the people who like it feel as though as they've been "chosen".

Texhnolyze stands in a very strange middle ground between edgy teenage ramble and an actual mature adult show. The main problem it has is that ... it has nothing to take away from it, for some this might mean it's pretentious, but I'd actually say it's "messed up".

The show makes so much emphasis on "death" being the solution/punishment that it's no different from, once again, edgy teenage ramble. What even should the audience take away from this? "If you succumb to nihilism, you're better off dead" is a messed up idea from a messed up author who lives in a messed up suicidal society in the name of Japan.

Once you've grown up, and been exposed to death enough times, you'll come to realize that there's no heaven, nothing to romanticize death about. You merely just stop functioning, lose consciousness, you'll never realize your own death.

Even if that makes humans sound like machines, we're not machines at all, so the idea of "destroying the machine" once it serves no purpose is as messed up as it sounds. Death is never a solution, and it should be avoided as much as possible.

And let me question as well this idea of "eternal life" equals succumbing to nihilism. There's no rule that says it should be like that, but in Texhnolyze, that's just the way it is.

There's nothing else for me to criticize about this show, I don't really dislike anything about it other than it having nothing to take away from it; the animation, OST, characters, story and voice acting are all good, it has some nice western art references here and there, and it's share bit of symbolism. But who knows, maybe I'm stupid, maybe there's actually more to take away from this show, but I just couldn't get anything from it.

If you liked the show, but you didn't find the themes compelling like me, I recommend checking out "Casshern Sins". Despite it being nowhere near as subtle as Texhnolyze, it directly challenges it's themes.

Final score: 5/10. Scoring it any lower would be underrating it, but scoring it any higher would make it look as if I was recommending it, and I'd never recommend this to anybody.

Still, I'll just leave it unscored in my list, since my deep appreciation for the show prevents me from giving it a low score. I've just grown tired of it, but I'll never forget the time I used to like it.

I enjoyed this show, as many other people have, but most MAL users would not. The visual style is somewhat abnormal and the episodes are self-contained. Also, other reviews and synopses overstate the presence of psychiatry in the show beyond a fun setting. The show isn't really about psychiatry; it's just psychiatry-flavored. This is not a bad thing, but if you watch this show expecting something substantial in that regard, disappointment is inevitable.

They give you enough almost-romance scenes to keep you watching ('oh maybe the next episode will go a little further!'). tl;dr: A sequel season that has a bunch of smaller but still great stories, though it does so at the expense of any progress in any overarching plot lines or character/relationship development in the main couple.

The second season of Kyokou Suiri, AKA In/Spectre, continues to follow Kotoko and Kuro as they deal with various affairs involving both humans and supernatural entities. Seeing how the first season ended with a battle of wits between Kotoko and Rikka, I had assumed that in this season Rikka would continue to mastermind various incidents and Kotoko would continue to face off against her in resolving them. However, this isn’t ... the case at all. Let alone serving as the antagonist of an arc, Rikka barely barely shows up in this season at all. She has enough presence to remind viewers that she exists, but she isn’t really important at all.

As such, all of the arcs this season are pretty limited in scope and aren’t really contributing to any sort of overarching story. They’re also in general pretty short, ranging from one to four episodes, which is far from the Steel Lady arc that took up pretty much the entire first season. The arcs this season are a lot simpler than the Steel Lady arc, but overall I found them just as interesting. Every arc in the anime involves Kotoko using her wits and knowledge of the supernatural to figure out the exact nature of whatever supernatural problem is occurring and then dealing with it.

The most interesting part of this as in the previous season isn’t the actual solving of mysteries, which is overtly straight forward most of the time. Rather, the most interesting part is Kotoko weaving stories that are far from what actually happened but are completely believable to those she tells. This isn’t an anime about a detective solving mysteries, it’s an anime about a liar fooling her marks. She has good reasons for doing so and there isn’t any maliciousness involved whatsoever so it’s entertaining and fascinating, even when you like the people being lied to and tricked.

On that note, this season had a lot of great side characters. For example, Masayuki and Yuki-Onna were just really likable and thus it was really satisfying to see them get solid character and relationship development. And as another example, the Otonashis had interesting backgrounds and motivations so it was interesting to see all that get fleshed out. These all felt like one off characters and I doubt we’ll see them at all in any future arcs. But their presence still made it easy to get invested in their respective arcs which made the anime overall much more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, the main character’s didn’t fair so well. Kotoko and Kuro didn’t really have any development whatsoever. They have zero character growth, and while Kotoko’s unique personality is enough to keep her interesting, Kuro seems to be getting kind of stale. There are comments made in passing by Kotoko that imply that their relationship certainly is progressing off screen, but this wasn’t focused on in the anime at all. To be honest, the two of them felt less like they were written as actual people, and more so just their functions in the plot, which is making it a lot harder to stay invested in them as characters. This doesn’t matter much this season as the writing doesn’t seem to be asking the viewer to care about them all that much, however it will likely be a detriment to future arcs where the narrative shifts to focusing on Kotoko and Kuro themselves.

The art and animation were solid enough. The character designs were decent but nothing particularly memorable. The OP and ED were also reasonably solid in terms of the song and visuals. The soundtrack was also fine but didn’t really stand out.
