[klus´ter-in]a multifunctional glycoprotein with roles in the metabolism and transport of lipids and membrane fragments, secretion of hormones, reproductive biology, inhibition of assembly of the membrane attack complex of complement activation, programmed cell death, and modulation of intercell interactions; its expression is enhanced in tissue injury and remodeling as well as in degenerative diseases such as alzheimer's disease.

(klŭs'tĕr-in),Heterodimeric highly conserved secreted glycoprotein, which is expressed in a wide variety of tissues and found in all human fluids; implicated in physiologic processes such as sperm maturation, lipid transportation, complement inhibition, tissue remodeling, membrane recycling, cell-cell and cell-substratum interactions, stabilization of stressed proteins in a folding-competent state and promotion or inhibition of apoptosis.
