compaction
[kəm′pak·shən] (computer science)
A technique for reducing the space required for data storage without losing any information content. Also known as squishing.
(engineering)
Increasing the dry density of a granular material, particularly soil, by means such as impact or by rolling the surface layers.
(geology)
Process by which soil and sediment mass loses pore space in response to the increasing weight of overlying material.

compaction
1. The process of inducing a closer packing of the solid particles in freshly mixed concrete or mortar during placement by reducing the volume of voids, usually by vibration, centrifugation, tamping, or some combination of these actions.
2. A similar manipulation of other cementitious mixtures, soils, aggregate, or the like.
