Bedin, Fedor Andreevich

 

Born May 16 (28), 1889, in the village of Novopokrovskoe, Kostroma Province. Master of the Khokhloma style of painting on wood.

Bedin began working when he was 12 years old. He studied with the master F. F. Krasil’nikov. In 1931 he was one of the founders of the Novopokrovskoe artel, which became part of the Khokhloma Artist Factory in 1960. From 1934 on he was an instructor of industrial training. He very skillfully continued and varied the Khokhloma tradition of ornamentation. In the mid-1950’s he helped return the craft to the traditions of the folk style of painting. Many of the present Khokhloma masters are Bedin’s pupils.
