Cook, Sir Joseph

Cook, Sir Joseph, 1860–1947, Australian statesman, b. England. A leader of the Free Trade party, he served as prime minister (1913–14) and later as minister of the navy (1917–21) and high commissioner to London (1921–27). He was Australian representative at the Paris Peace Conference and a delegate (1922–26) to the League of Nations.

When Watson was preparing to go to Captain Cook's Landing Place at Kurnell in August 1925, he carefully pasted in the whole of a very rare text indeed: the libretto of the short play enacted at the Landing Place on 7 January 1901, with a cast of Captain Cook, Sir Joseph Banks, Dr Solander, the Islander called Tupia and the personification of Australia, supported by seamen, marines and Aborigines, with incidental music played by an orchestra under the baton of Lewis de Groen.
