(oceanography)
A unit of distance, originally equal to the length of a ship's anchor cable, now variously considered to be 600 feet (183 meters), 608 feet (185.3 meters, one-tenth of a British nautical mile), or 720 feet or 120 fathoms (219.5 meters). Also known as cable.
