Date and time ideas

[edit]

How about...

May 5 (Monday), evening

[edit]

Regarding a time, how about we start at 6:30, but expect that people might wander in later? BTW this is the same date that El Señor Presidente will be Today's Featured Article. It ends at 4 5 pm in our time zone. How cool is that? Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 06:26, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as event planning goes. Is anyone thinking about something like name tags? Some sort of indicator to differentiate which table is the meeting and which is full of random people? Mkdwtalk 01:39, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why? Sitting at a table full of random people might be more fun! Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 01:41, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Location ideas

[edit]

The venue has to allow minors, and should not be expensive. Ideas:

Benny's Bagels in Kitsilano

[edit]

Steamwork's Pub in Gastown

[edit]

Café Deux Soleils on Commercial Drive

[edit]
Clockwise from left: Eclecticology, [unnamed], Accounting4Taste, maclean, thedemonhog, jbmurray, and Clayoquot

We're having a meetup! There is much to celebrate and discuss:

For attendees

[edit]
  • How will we know which table the Wikipedians are at? Well, if you can, bring a flower, and the Wikipedia table will be the one with the flowers.
  • Bring your wiki war stories; there will be lots of people who want to hear them.
  • Please be careful with any photographs you take at this event. People may not want identifiable pictures of themselves associated with their usernames, so please only post pictures with permission of everyone in the photo. See here for some very, very depressing discussion.
  • We ask nicely for people to respect the wishes of people who don't want to have their picture taken. However, we can't enforce photography restrictions in a public place, so unfortunately people who are very concerned about remaining anonymous may want to skip this event.

Publicity and planning

[edit]

Good to see that we'll probably have a good turnout. I'll bring name tag things to the event. Can anyone volunteer to help me spam user talk pages? There are probably a few dozen people to notify. I'll start in a day or two. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 02:50, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will help you notify others. –thedemonhog talkedits 03:08, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! By the way, it would be great if everyone who's watching this page could invite the Vancouver Wikipedians whom they know. It is always nicer to be invited by someone who you've collaborated with, than to get a notification from a random username, and many people don't watch the local messageboards. Then later in the week we'll go through the relevant user categories and Wikiprojects systematically to notify everyone who hasn't been notified yet. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 04:09, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the meetup due to a friend's recently scheduled birthday dinner; however, I will notify users starting from the letter "P" as you suggested on my talk page. –thedemonhog talkedits 05:25, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh no :( That sucks (for us), but there will be a next time. Thanks for offering to help out, it is very kind of you. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 05:40, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The date looks like it will be May 5. I'd like to make this firm this Tuesday so that everyone can fill it in on their social calendars :) Any alternative suggestions before then? Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 02:53, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For publicity, put up a message on the Community Portal a week before 5 May (i.e. 29 April) Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 04:25, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! I'll be there hopefully. Aquarius • talk 04:47, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't come since I'm only 14 and going to Kitsilano is going to make a big fuss for me. **Annoyomous24** (talk) 19:00, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I can be there and will look forward to it. Accounting4Taste:talk 19:54, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can be there. Look forward to it. OldManRivers (talk) 19:35, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Approximately how late will it be going? I can probably make it later in the evening. –thedemonhog talkedits 20:25, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea, but I've e-mailed you my cell phone number so you can call me. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 03:07, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, can't make it; time conflict with summer session. Maybe next time. /Carson 04:25, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can't make it :( I'll be in Hawaii, soaking up some rays AlexMiller.Canada (talk) 00:29, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

People and places to spam (please strike out when done)

Considerations

[edit]

Boring disclaimer. Please note that since Wikipedia is an open and anonymous collaborative site, any persons under the age of 16 should have consent from their legal guardian if planning to attend. Also, Benny's serves alcoholic beverages, but like a restaurant, will not affect people under age.

Benny's has free wireless. Is anyone planning on bringing a laptop?

Agenda?

[edit]

Does anyone have any particular topics for discussion?

  • I can think of a few: dealing with the upcoming Olympics; most-livable city ranking (quoting the headlines); and maybe a tag-drive for all the articles in the geographic area. I don't want to formalize this, just throwing some ideas out. Franamax (talk) 08:19, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I know some people have talked about revamping the Vancouver article as well as looking into the featured status of a few other notable points of interest including the Portal:Vancouver. The UBC project Madness Mayhem was also one of the original subject matters. I've completed the roll call on the WikiProject Vancouver. It appears that out of the 60+ members, we have 19 that have checked into the project and about 20 others that are active but have not checked in. Thoughts about reorganizing the WikiProject to make it more relevant and active would also be a good jumping off point. Mkdwtalk 00:04, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • People's Wikipedia experiences - crazy stories, good and bad times we've had, what we've learned, what we think Wikipedia will look like in two years, that kind of thing. People will have a wide range of editing interests and there will probably be quite a few of us who rarely contribute to Vancouver-specific topics. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 07:19, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Minutes

[edit]

Someone take minutes, please. Thanks. /Carson 21:04, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

[edit]

Greetings from us. We're in Benny's. There's User:Clayoquot, User:Mkdw, User:Eclecticology, User:Franamax, User:Accounting4Taste, User:maclean25, and earlier there was User:thedemonhog. All is well.  :) --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 03:56, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

JB, you got to meet Clayoquot ?? I Am So Jealous !!! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:48, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. Clayoquot was very cool, and I learned how to pronounce their username! But everyone was very cool. It was good to meet you guys. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 05:06, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Endorse. I'm very glad I went and got to meet some cool and interesting people. Note to attendees, if you want a copy of the software I mentioned, drop me an email and I can send it by return. Franamax (talk) 05:59, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(*Blushing*) You guys were all very cool. We wrapped up at around 10:30 and lots of good time was had! Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 06:20, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Who would like to not be identified or blurred in the photograph(s)? –thedemonhog talkedits 06:33, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(outdent:)Perhaps better to do things the other way around, and ask people to opt in, rather than opt out, by detailing (why not below?) what is acceptable for them. I can start. NB we should beware: at least one person was happy to be photographed but not to be identified. If everyone but that person is to be identified then, by a rather easy process of deduction, in effect we would be identifying them indirectly. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 07:09, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was great to meet some local 'pedians; thanks, everyone, for a fun evening. Accounting4Taste:talk 14:49, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Thanks especially to Clayoquot for the organization. If someone wants to set the next one up after the summer holiday period, I will be able to answer questions about Wikimania. Eclecticology (talk) 08:01, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
