Email addresses at the help desk

[edit]

I have two comments on this diff. One, when you remove an email address it's nice to replace it with {{details removed}}, which displays as a clickable link to an explanatory page; two, you didn't explain why you removed the email address. I tend to use "I have removed your email address to protect your privacy", but some of the other helpers use {{subst:HD/cd}}.

But thank you for diving in at the Help Desk - the more helpers the better! -- John of Reading (talk) 08:10, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Astray

[edit]

You've become a regular at the help desk; welcome to the cabal! I just wanted to bring to your attention your use of {{astray}} earlier tonight. I created the template for a specific type of question we get where there's a real indication in a person's post that they think we are affiliated with the subject of an article they've seen, thinks we are the official site of the topic they read about or similar misunderstandings. Classic examples: 12345. When a user is asking a general knowledge question there is no reason to think this is the case, and so they should be simply referred to the reference desk, for which we have {{RD1}} {{RD2}} and {{RD3}}. I actually nominated the template for deletion, despite its usefulness for its proper application, because it is being so often used where one of the RD templates belong instead. When it was kept, some who participated recommended I bring it up on the answerer's talk page when I saw the problem occur. I always knew I could do that, but felt it might be seen as a little brazen. But since it's continuing, I came over here to broach the issue and hope you don't take this the wrong way. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:59, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Beatles poll

[edit]

Hello — this message is to inform you that there is currently a public poll to determine whether to capitalize the definite article ("the") when mentioning the band "THE BEATLES" mid-sentence. As you've previously participated either here, here, or here, your input would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Jburlinson (talk) 21:23, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm having trouble recalling particpating in that discussion. I looked at the linked pages, and the only thing I could find is that I responded to an edit request that is not related to this topic. Am I missing something? RudolfRed (talk) 04:08, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, I think your comment was on a somewhat different topic, but it was included in a thread regarding uppercase vs. lowercase usage of the name "The Beatles", so I thought you might have an interest in the topic. There's an effort to try to blanket as many editors as possible who might have an opinion. I just didn't want anyone who might want to contribute to be unaware of the poll. Sorry for bothering you. Best wishes. Jburlinson (talk) 19:18, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AT&T

[edit]

Thank you for your assistance in redirecting AT&T to AT&T Corp when that was intended. I understand you don't believe AT&T should be redirected to AT&T Inc when that is intended. However, the following users have all agreed with me that my redirect requests to AT&T Inc are in good faith and have acted on them.

Also, User:JHunterJ at WT:D#AT&T and User:BD2412 at WT:WPDAB#AT&T have also agreed that the approach is in good faith though they have not acted on any edit requests. I submit that there is at least sufficient consensus that it would be appropriate to ask you not to watch for or decline any further such requests, but simply to let them be decided by other users. The discussion is already in the right fora but I wouldn't mind if you wish to add to it there or expand it elsewhere. Thank you for your understanding. 12.153.112.21 (talk) 15:11, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NORTH CYPRUS ARTICLE - EDIT REQUEST

[edit]

Dear RudolfRed,

You recently denied the edit request on North Cyprus Country page, and noted that I didn't need permission to edit on a semi-protected page. I don't understand this unfortunately, as I have been working for over 3 months, on adding this information which brings both the economy section up to date and the rise of the Kulaksiz 5 'landmark' case, deciding the fate of thousands of peoples homes.

Please help me to change this article, I have been from pillar to post, and I am sure I am further away now than I have ever been, from having the additional information published and live.

Kind regards,

USB 1/2/3

[edit]

Thanks for your good faith response but when you respond to a question please please don't just post what you think is the answer when in fact you, just like myself, don't know much about it. The only thing I already knew when posting my question was that at least certain USB cords (which happened to be USB 1) didn't work like USB 2. Sure, one can use them but they usually, (as I know now after getting lucky in my further research,) don't give you the USB 2 advantage, thus there is no sense in having a USB 2 component wired to a high speed port with an outdated USB 1 cord. Ergo: We both are a little bit smarter by now ;) TMCk (talk) 03:30, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Swiss UMEF University

[edit]

The article Swiss UMEF University has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No reliable sources can be found describing this organization, which therefore fails to meet WP:GNG. Passing references to UMEF do not bolster its case. The UN Global Compact refers to UMEF as "Delisted... Expelled due to failure to communicate progress."

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. You're a 'Featured Host'

[edit]

You may have seen this announcement that all the 'Featured Hosts' - whose names and pictures randomly cycle round in the Teahouse Header - have just been updated.

As you are currently one of the 29 most active editors at WP:TH, your name and an image has now replaced that of an inactive host. But because you haven't yet added yourself to the full list of active hosts, I have chosen what I hope might be an acceptable image to you (over the default picture of a cup of green tea). It would be great if you would now do two things:

  • Check or change the 'featured host' image allocated to you. Edit it at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured/18, or undo my changes if you don't wish to be 'featured'.
  • Create a 'host profile' for yourself, and choose a relevant picture - click the 'Experienced editor?' button in the TH Header to formally sign up to create a separate entry on the full list of all 89 current hosts which new editors can view.

Following up re: Automated invites thread

[edit]

Hi RudolfRed. Since the thread has been archived, I figured I'd follow up here. It looks like the invitee you mentioned (Basheed Shaik) had many edits, but they were all to an article draft in their sandbox that was subsequently deleted for promotional concerns. So, they met the edit count threshold. However, I appreciate that you raised the apparent discrepancy, and please don't hesitate to report other apparent false positives on my talkpage. Best, J-Mo 19:25, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with thumbnails image of subsection

[edit]

Hello RudolfRed, the problem began on yesterday without display all images in subsection. This occured at "all" Wikipedia pages, not at specific article or file. As I open all pages, they cannot show the thumbnails. It might be my web browser error. Could you explain the issue please? The Supermind (talk) 18:18, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I'm sad to see I have dedicated some time to add what the director of the Cannes Film Festival said in an interview, I posted also the article with the full interview. The information provided was verified on an accredited source as it works with Wikipedia.

The fact that I create a new user with no previous contributions does not make me less experienced how to use Wikipedia. Keep in mind experienced users can also create new profiles and if you are going to take place in he middle of a discussion like the one I have reported looking for help you will need to read the article and the references used to later provide a comment.

The users lunguts has a rude message on his profile and has been acting rudely removing others contributions. To back up this behavior is to tell other users that are doing the right thing to not participate and is helping bad users to do as the please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Torrescarlitos (talkcontribs) 04:40, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Advice for newcomers

[edit]

Hello,
You are receiving this message because you are invited to take part at Wikipedia:Advice for newcomers where you can provide advice that will help our newcomers in the future. It is not a discussion forum, just a place where you say what advice would be helpful to our future editors. I would like to get at least 100 editors to take part in this so please feel free to spread the word to other editors as well. I look forward to seeing what you say to newcomers. deletion of text and redirection of Kabi page

[edit]

Hi, thanks for you feedback on the tea house page. As you may tell, I am new to Wiki and just getting my head around it. Background: By coincidence I met Kabi elders at the 'Gympie Pyramid' fighting for a sacred site, threatened by highway construction, and I offered help to rewrite that article. Now I was told by the author of the Kabi article who I met on site that the article was violated in the past and redirected without discussion or grounds. The 'Gympie pyramid' article needed references to the Kabi tribe and so I reinstated that article as the Kabi people asked me to, yesterday.

You wrote 'The subjects of articles do not get to determine its content. Please work with other editors to get consensus on if the page should be redirected or not' I had this problem when I first uploaded the 'Gympie pyramid' article, as right away experienced editors jumped at it and reversed it without grounds. Now they are working on it, investing more time than I could have imagined.

I like to ask you if you can support me here on the Kabi article? They say they have won a 'land title claim' against the Gubbi Gubbi tribe and I don't see any Gubbi Gubbi fighting for the land at the Gympie Pyramid. I am convinced they are in the right.

I reversed again and will do so in the future until I see someone coming up with information that shows that Gubbi Gubbi and Kabi Kabi is the same. Its clearly not by all maps and books I see, all the links I got forwarded yesterday. So how can I make sure that page stays online? Where can I complain about persons deleting text without discussion? thanks Wikigetsme123 (talk) 15:59, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikigetsme123: Discuss it on the article's talk page to get consensus. Do not engage in an edit war. RudolfRed (talk) 23:05, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
well that articles page gets deleted and redirected... so no discussion ever there, and none at Dianekmt Talk page. Now I started it on the Gubbi Gubbi Talk page. Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)

[edit]

Hello. Although for some reason you aren't signed up as a host at the Teahouse, I recognise you've made a huge number of contributions there over the years. So I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

  • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts and other helpers if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
  • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
  • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

Thank you! Nick Moyes (talk) 17:18, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Moyes: Thank you for the note and the invitation to be a mentor. My availability is not precictable, so I will decline to be a mentor for now so that I don't leave a mentee stranded. I will continue to help at the help desk and teahouse when I can. I am not listed as a full host, but another editor did add me to the "featured host" list at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured/18. RudolfRed (talk) 01:33, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Line breaks

[edit]

Hello RudolfRed, I saw that you knew about code on Wikipedia, so I would like to ask you for help with this, if it's okay.

How could I make an "optional" linebreak in a Wikipedia article? I see that the "br" code can force a new line, but I want to do something a little different — it's in the context of a list of cities with two names, in two different languages. Sometimes the names are too long for the columns, but it would be better if the two names can remain clearly defined, to avoid confusion.

For example
(this place in Germany)
Ralbitz-Rosenthal/Ralbicy-Róžant
...I am happy to have that on one line, or across two lines, like this:
Ralbitz-Rosenthal/
Ralbicy-Róžant
...but not split up, like
Ralbitz-Rosenthal/Ralbicy-
Róžant

Is it possible to do that? ... Thank you! 1RightSider (talk) 06:55, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
