Badfinger DYK nom

[edit]

Hey... Would you consider an exception in this case? It's technically oldish but this is the user's first article of any size (a former anon that was converted to a registered user through the good offices of User:Kingboyk and who looks to be a potentially good contributor) and I think it would really make their day, get them more excited about WP, etc, to be selected. The weekend gap really plays havoc with stuff on certain days if it is nominated late (which is MY fault, I meant to nominate it earlier... don't penalise them for that)

Hi Lar, I am afraid it cannot be done, as just a couple of weeks ago, I removed around six suggestions and had to explain my rationale to one of the biggest contributors to DYK. I understand the stupidity of the 5-day rule as the weekend gap plays havoc with entries created on tuesday and wednesday - I lost out similarly on a suggestion from Siamese twins (English language) (though it was made in time) and then realised that nixie was updating DYK single-handedly and found it tough to do so. This was one of the reasons that spurred me to go for adminship. I do hope that the newbie will contribute more. btw, this weekend problem will go because the main page is being re-designed so that it will have DYK and the Picture of the day daily, most probably from March. You may want to have a look at Talk:Main Page. I am sorry that I am unable to help you out this once (- you'd have also seen that two other suggestions were removed this week for being late submissions; If I were to include these, recent suggestions would get delayed and some may become old by the end of the week), hope you can understand, TIA --Gurubrahma 19:15, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ya, I understand, no worries. Just something I thought up on my own, ZincOrbie has no idea I suggested a waiver or even that I suggested the article itself... (that was the other reason I brought it up here, in case you couldn't see your way clear)... Prolly best that it not be mentioned further. Ta. (and yes, if I ever decide to go for admin this is one of the areas I'd be wanting to work on too...) ++Lar: t/c 21:17, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

Deletion sorting - India

[edit]

Gurubrahma, can you please take care of it for a couple of weeks. Ganesh is away and I am travelling back to India in a couple of days. It will be about two weeks before I settle down in Chennai and get an internet connection. Then, wife permitting, I will be active as I used to be. So I have plenty of time before responding to the RfA question. If I come across Idleguy anywhere in Chennai, I'll make sure that he agrees to run for RfA :-) Tintin (talk) 23:48, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Making Orphanbot more intelligent

[edit]

Hi Carnildo, I like the work done by Orphanbot in tagging unsourced images and notifying the uploaders on their talkpages. More often than not, some anons register to upload pics and upload them wrongly. The very first messages on the talkpage are usually by the orphanbot and the new users are confused. Can you program the bot in such a way that it leaves a {{subst:welcome}} on such pages. Can the orphan bot also add a link to WP:IUP or other relevant pages so that the people do not end up repeating the same offence again and again? Thanks for your time, --Gurubrahma 16:39, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The general consensus on Wikipedia is that welcoming users is not something that bots should be doing. As for your other suggestion, I'll see about it. I've been trying to come up with a better wording for the messages for a while now. --Carnildo 00:31, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

INCOTW

[edit]

How long do nominations normally stand for INCOTW? I'm guessing that since it says Collaboration of the week, that it means that the list should probably get refreshed each week? We currently have nominations ranging from Feb 5 to Feb 25. I was about to delete the older noms and update the new COTW based on the votes, but I didn't want to tred on anyone's feet...so I thought I'd better check with you first and understand how it works! [edit]

Sorry I screwed that up. What is the template for informing users? I could not find it after updating. Also, where is the archive of old dyks? There is something under "archive" on the talk page, but it hasn't been updated in a while. This wasn't a milicious ignorance of process, by the way, I just screwed up. Nelson Mandela pages and Tony Blair Legislation

[edit]

Hi

With respect, the item I added was not vandalism. It was making a political point, that (a) Nelson Mandela was originally classified as a terrorist in the UK, and (b) the UK government of Tony Blair is trying to pass legislation outlawing the glorification of terrorists. Thus, praising Nelson would become a criminal offence here. I think it is right to point such things out, since Nelson was a hero and should not be treated in such a way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Egnever (talkcontribs)

Hi Gurubrahma - thanks for the heads-up and DYK support. The DYK medal is a very good one. If by the "talkpage" you mean Wikipedia talk:Defense of content, then yeah, its on my watchlist and I'll do my best. Note on Mahatma Gandhi - the long-dormant PR has been closed (albeit unilaterally by someone), but I'll be adding the in-line citations soon - haven't gotten round to it, sorry. A key issue to tackle is the size - 63kb. I had hoped to cut it as close to 50 as possible, but...I think I have to accept that Gandhi's well-documented life gives a plethora of important info from various sources. Hi Gurubrahma, thanks for the message. I'm sorry if my update of DIY was out of process. I was trying to be very careful, but it was my first time to do a DIY update, so it does not surprise me if I made a mistake. Here is what I did:

  1. First, I did list the article at Template talk:Did you know. [2]
  2. After a time, however, I realized that it was the only article left for March 1, and I knew that on the weekend we run the picture of the day instead of DIY. Therefore, I was afraid the McCoy might be overlooked on Friday and that it would be inelligible by the time Monday rolled around.
  3. At that point, I read all the rules about updating the page, including that any admin can do it, and the guidelines for how long an article should probably stay up (at least 6 hours, no more than 24). I saw that the Jordanhill railway station had been up for quite some time - not unexpectedly since it is our millionth article. Still, it seemed like there was time for a short listing of McCoy before the weekend.
  4. So, I put McCoy into the Template, and I removed it from the Template:Talk listing. At this point, I was a little confused by the instructions. There is information there saying "please archive the article" until it is stable, but there is also information there that talks about auto-archiving by a bot. I decided that what the instructions were asking me to do is to remove the article from that Talk page and place it on the relevant Portal history, which I did [3].
  5. Unsure if I did everything correctly or not, I stayed on Wikipedia for several hours [4] to see if there were any issues with the process I followed and to watch for any vandalism to the articles linked in the DIY.

I see now that I missed the part about Bolding the article name. I'm sorry about that.
Did I also do the wrong thing at Step 4 about the archiving? It seems that the way I archived it led you to believe I had never listed it there on the talk page. As I exlain above in points 1 and 4, I did list it, but I removed it myself [5] , following what I thought was the process.
As for the opinions on the wiki about admins, I agree with you that it is very important for admins to set a proper example. Appearance of impropriety can be almost as unwelcome as actual improprietry. However, as I hope you agree, we do have jobs to do, and we will make human mistakes. I feel that users here who are so suspicous of admins that they can't assume good faith, at least long enough for the admin to explain his/herself, can be invited to leave the project with no reason to miss them. All I can do is to read the instructions, try to follow them as best I'm able, and learn from my inevitable mistakes.
I don't know that I will ever have another occasion to do a DIY update. I certainly don't plan to make a habbit of updaing it, though I do anticipate I will list future articles for consideration. In fact, earlier yesterday, I did list Episcopal Diocese of Dallas at DIY. Unlike the Joseph McCoy article, I had nothing to do with writing this one. I just found it as a result of answering a question at the new-user Help desk.
Just in case I ever do update DIy again, can you please help me understand how the archiving is supposed to work? Thank you again for contacting me, and for all your hard work at DIY. Johntex\talk 18:03, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, Gururahma. Thanks for your message on my talk page about DYK. I think it is probably best for the future if I don't promote items I myself list. I do think our instructions seem to be a little contradictory in the sense that the rules seems to say any entry can be removed after any length of time (though it does say less than 6 hours is probably not good) and at the same time there is this counter about minimum time to next update. Those two things seem to be at odds. I still don't think I fully understand the archiving, either, but I'll re-read your post as well as the instructions and maybe it will click for me on second reading. Thanks again, Johntex\talk 19:38, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your Concerns

[edit]

Hi, I appreciate for your concerns. At the same time, I would like to mention that these are figures (Babu Rao & Victor Premasagar) well-known in the established priestly circles. Most of their students are in rural parishes and hence out of access to internet which means lesser viewing. However, as you may have seen, Victor Premasagar has many external links. Old Testament scholars in India are few - thanks to the difficult subject. You must have also seen Gerhard von Rad who is the expert scholar of that subject. In this context, may I put before you that these are figures who would have been left without mention had I not brought them into Wikipedia ? Further, Victor Premasagar is a Cantabresian, a brilliant academic scholar who was awarded the Cambridge Tripos. Film actors and Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and N.T.Rama Rao know him by name. Once when Bishop Victor Premasagar was in the lounge of the Hyderabad Airport, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao came across to him and said that it was his desire to act as a priest / father in his future film - this was sometime around the 1979-80s. Further, N.T.Rama Rao studied in the same college (Andhra Christian College-Guntur) as Bishop Victor Premasagar. Later, when N.T.Rama Rao became the Chief Minister, he went to the Cathedral-in-Medak where he was introduced to the audience - N.T.Rama Rao was struck by the Bishop's capacity to control the masses. Although Rev.G.Babu Rao is my Dad, I have to mention him. He is the most simple of the scholars. He does not even know that his name is in this encyclopedia - if he knows it he would take me to task and order the removal - such is his simplicity. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grbpradeep (talkcontribs)

Minor heads-up at DYK

[edit]

Hi, thanks for updating the DYK. I find it very difficult to update it for the 0000 UTC monday update as it would be around 0530 in the morning here and an almost unearthly time for me. Good to see the update as the first thing in morning - also, you have left me with no work ;) by updating the talkpages and usertalk pages as well - btw, it is not necessary to sign the usertalk pages, I was the only admin doing so till date. Finally, the only lapse was that you did not update the next updation time counter on the template talk, which may lead some other admin to update the template even before six hours - I have updated it this time. btw, after having a look at your user and talkpages, I know who to contact for selected anniversaries ;). --Gurubrahma 03:14, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

Hi, earlier when I kept some religious figures under Religion, they were removed by you. Next, I removed the existing figures there to which you remarked that it would amount to vandalism. Now, I have arranged the Religious section in the List of people from Andhra Pradesh so that all religious icons would find place.

I now see that someone has removed religious heads belonging to a particular religious community.

Shouldn't we stick on to a secular agenda ? or is that only a few religious heads belonging to a 'particular religion' would find place in that section ?

Kindly clarify. Thank you. P.S. Please let me know how to delete my other log in ID. PradeepGrbpradeepPradeep

Administrator's opinion requested

[edit]

I had recently deleted Hyderabad from the list of metro cities, and added it to the list of major cities in India. I did this, as Hyderabad is officially not a metro. However, User:hydkat insists that Hyderabad also be included in the metro list as it meets the required qualification, which in fact is true. Therefore, we are requesting your opinion on this matter. Should Hyderabad be included in wikipedia as a metro when there is no official declaration of it as such? Expecting your reply. thunderboltz 13:39, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem here is that this is not about an article, but about two templates: Metropolitan cities of India and Major Cities of India. So footnotes and such are not an option. Its either a Yes, or a No. thunderboltz 14:05, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, links about barely notable bands shouldn't go on the main page. The article itself is mostly made from press releases about the band and as such, it borders on WP:SPAM. Phr 01:00, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re your response: I didn't see any mention of that entry on the "do you know" discussion page and there was no edit summary when it got added to the template. Yes the band appears to technically meet the requirements of WP:MUSIC but marginally so (it looks from that page that any garage band can "go on tour" and make itself notable). It's also obvious that the article is mostly made from marketing materials. Lots of stuff gets suggested for the main page and most of it has to be rejected; IMO this particular entry shouldn't have made it. Phr 02:48, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Phr, why are you asking Gurubrahma about this instead of engaging on the talk page of the article, where you've been responded to? As I said there, the band is notable enough to merit an article, and the reason for the DYK nom was a neat factlet about them, not because they sell out Wembley Stadium. DYK is about neat, quirky but nevertheless interesting, things... things that people might not otherwise know that draw them in deeper to reading and contributing. I'm a relative newcomer here, with not quite 2500 edits, but all 7 of my selfnoms for DYK have been selected for the front page (and not all by Gurubrahma either), so I'd put forward that I know how to write an article with a quirky hook that makes it worthy of DYK. As to the article being marketing material, it credits the press pack at the bottom, some material was adapted from that. Nothing wrong with that. As to not seeing any mention of the entry before it was promoted, look at the history, it was there on the talk page of the DYK all weekend... Hope that helps and happy editing! ++Lar: t/c 02:59, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There's a difference between validity as an article (I've just defended it) and the DYK entry. Both of them have their proper venues for discussion and I suspect for neither is it here. I wouldn't have put it on the front page myself but despite Lar calling me a 'deletionist' I wouldn't delete the article either. They're 2 very different issues. As for the spam accusation, that is just laughable. --kingboyk 03:19, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All in good fun, Steve! Some of my best friends are 'deletionists' you know... from what I hear, deletionists are people too! But ya, here is prob'ly not the place. I'm just trying to engage Phr somehow. ++Lar: t/c 04:17, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did You Know? question

[edit]

Hi. Is DYK (being on the front page and all that) toned down/censored? If not, 1987: What The Fuck Is Going On? which I created on the 4th has some interesting stuff about the band who later became The KLF burning their debut album (something of a prelude to burning a million pounds a few years later). It's rather full of bad language I'm afraid, but for a new article I think it's at quite a high standard. --kingboyk 03:12, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting you.

it's great, some one quoting me as if I am Jimbo Wales ;), but I just added the context so that people don't twist it and quote it out of context - as it so happens many a time with Jimbo's quotes. --Gurubrahma 05:30, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About metro status of Hyderabad: No... Its not official as yet as you say. Or this site would have changed:[6] plus there is an ongoing demand/debate [7], [8] that for some reason despite no opposition to them, it is not being done. I believe the same thing is happening to other Indian cities demanding this. Nevertheless I will add what you have suggested to the main page.

Thanks for voting in my RFA. Although you chose not to support my request, the final vote count was (66/2/3), so I am now an administrator. Please let me know if at any stage you need help, or if you have comments on how I am doing as an admin. I appreciate your comments and will try to take them on board. Vandalism help...

[edit]

A user from Jalander, for some reason, has vandalised the page Maruti Udyog three times with 3 different BSNL ip addresses: 59.94.209.62, 59.94.211.246 & 59.94.210.241 . I found out he's from jalandar by doing a whois search on him. Also can you tell me what do you do to repeated vandalism by users with no fixed ip address?

Archiving - heads-up

[edit]

Hi, you archived Wikipedia Talk:Barnstar and award proposals to Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals/Archive9. I believe it is inappropriate. Talkpages should have their own archives, such as Wikipedia Talk:Barnstar and award proposals/Archive9 etc. --Gurubrahma 02:56, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]

If you read Girolamo Maggi, particularly the 2nd paragraph, you'll see why I moved it above Australian Passport in the DYK. It's just a much more interesting article, although I'm fine with allowing you to adhere to a certain layout. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-03-8 16:23
