Mod Tools

[edit]

On April 21 of 2016, Treyarch announced a Closed alpha for level and mod development tools for the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops III.[1] The development tools were publicly released as an Open Beta on September 28, 2016 as part of Update 15.1 on the PC. Simultaneously launched was an optional asset pack that includes assets from existing Black Ops III levels. The released package includes many of the tools used by Treyarch to develop assets for the game.

Mod Tools Launcher

[edit]

The Mod Tools Launcher is where both Radiant: Black Edition and Asset Property Editor can be accessed, alongside smaller applications such as the map compiler, light compiler, and Export2Bin. Mods and levels may also be published to the Steam Workshop from the launcher.

Radiant: Black Edition

[edit]

Radiant is the level editor and visual effects editor for Black Ops III released as part of the game's Mod Tools. Radiant was initially based on Id Software's GtkRadiant, as is the engine Call of Duty games are built on. [2]

Asset Property Editor

[edit]

Asset Property Editor, or APE, is a model viewer and asset editor, and is required to access the contents of GDT files, which house the various assets used by the game, including images, materials, models and animations.

Also included in the package are decompiled versions of the zombie level "The Giant" and the multiplayer level "Combine" to be used as examples for developing zombies and multiplayer levels.

Grip: Combat Racing

[edit]

Gameplay

[edit]

Grip: Combat Racing is an arcade racing game in which the player controls a double-sided vehicle capable of driving on its top and bottom. Players can use weapons and powerups to combat opponents as they travel at high speeds around various tracks. When racing, racers are capable of driving on walls and ceilings of the track, given they have enough speed.

Included in the game is a single-player campaign, online multiplayer, and a 4-player split-screen mode (limited to 2-player split-screen on the Nintendo Switch).[3]

Game Modes

[edit]

The game features 5 race modes and 2 additional modes: [4]

  • Race
    • Classic Race - The main race mode, featuring powerups, where the first racer to cross the finish line wins.
    • Ultimate Race - A mode in which points are scored based on attacking opponents with weapons.
    • Elimination Race - A race mode in which the racer in last place is eliminated every 30 seconds.
    • Speed Demon - A race mode with powerups and weapons disabled.
    • Time Trial - A mode in which a single player attempts to earn the fastest time on a given track.
  • Arena - A mode set on unique arena tracks with the goal of destroying opponents.
  • Carkour - A single-player mode set on unique obstacle-course style tracks, with the goal of reaching the finish line.

Planets

[edit]

Grip: Combat Racing features tracks set on 4 fictional planets[5], including:

  • Liddo 5 - A planet covered in alien flora and abandoned research facilities.
  • Jahtra - A dusty red planet littered with rocks and cliffs.
  • Norvos - A snowy planet once used as a military installation.
  • Orbital Prime - An industrial metropolitan planet covered in man-made infrastructure.

Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown

[edit]

Reception

[edit]

The game has been criticized for its lack of moves, strategy, and a two-player mode.[6]

Gameplay

[edit]

Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown is a 2D action fighting game in which a player controlled character and an AI controlled character use offensive and defensive attacks, with the goal of depleting their opponent's health. If the player defeats the enemy, they will be presented with a password, which can be entered into the password menu on the main screen to play from their current position in the game. Upon completing all 9 stages, the player is granted the rank of champion.

Alongside the 'Play Game' mode, is the 'Practice' mode, in which the player is given the option of practicing their attacks on a stationary enemy on a randomly selected stage. In this mode, the opponent character will never move or attack the player, and will regenerate health when not in combat for a few moments.

Stages

[edit]

There are a total of 9 unique stages in the game.

  • Forest
  • Village
  • Dungeon
  • Swamp
  • Dark Forest
  • Bridge
  • Castle
  • Wrestling Ring
  • Mirror Room

Characters

[edit]

Of the 9 total playable characters in the game, 6 are playable from the start, and the other 3 must first be unlocked by defeating them in combat.
