History

[edit]

The "history" section here needs help. In 1993, the concept of server/client paved the way for almost all online games as we know them today - a server capable of tracking more than two player's activities. All "gamers" playing games today owe a lot to that single (very novel, at that time) innovation. Here's an ancient ACM write-up for it: http://www.acm.org/crossroads/xrds3-2/xpilot.html. --Connel MacKenzie - wikt 17:55, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This didn't happen in 1993! Apparently, xtank was started in 1988 and xconq in 1987. Rp (talk)

xconq is a turn based game. I don't know xtank. The innovation was, Bert Gÿsbers (who's not mentioned in the article), in 1993 converted the game from a single-server/multi-screen game to a true client/server using UDP as a pseudo real-time transport including reliable and unreliable data over a UDP stream, which is very fast. *That* is what all modern games use.

The Windows port was done in 1997, when my old DG finally kicked the bit bucket. :) Dickbalaska (talk) 07:22, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

XPilot-AI

[edit]

What is XPilot-AI? A new version of XPilot? There is a 5.0.1a1 version of XPilot 5. I don't know if it is the most recent version (I think there is at least a 5.0.1a3) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.35.65.21 (talk) 18:32, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Couldn't find much info about it, even at the homepage. Do you have any websites with information on it? rCX (talk) 06:12, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've found this page: http://cswww.essex.ac.uk/cig/2007/papers/2056.pdf
If I understand, XPilot-AI is a project for more efficients bots on XPilot. I saw working the server we can see on the screenshot, but it's not on the meta server anymore since several months (not a long time). That's all I know about it.
The latest version of XPilot NG, for Linux, is the 4.7.3~cvs20080. The 4.7.2 is the latest stable version (for Linux), but not the latest available. For the versions, we must also notice that the Windows (XPilot NT) versions, and Linux versions are not at the same level of developpement. There are still some developpements with XPilot fxi and the BloodsPilot project(Main page: http://bloodspilot.sourceforge.net/index.html). --Xiglofre (talk) 22:34, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks for the info. I see you have an account on the french Wikipedia. After we add this info, could you translate the article to french? Thanks! rCX (talk) 23:27, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will try to make a french article (but if you could verify that I do not write errors by ununderstanding some english...) --Xiglofre (talk) 09:01, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clarity

[edit]

I guess if you have never heard of xpilot before and have no idea about it, this article is pretty confusing. I got that its a multiplayer game of some description that employs maps. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.16.100.144 (talk) 09:59, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is the whole article confusing, or just the "Gameplay" section is not clear enough ? --Xiglofre (talk), 18:51, 13 January 2011 (UTC).[reply]
The Gameplay section is pretty bad. Why is the first sentence on Gameplay a technical detail? Is the game played in real time or turns? Etc, etc. 121.72.172.4 (talk) 13:03, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
