There was a reference

to putting sangaku in "temples and shrines". If you follow the Wikipedia links given for "temple" and "shrine" you would just be mystified, because the original Japanese distinction (i.e. referring to o-tera = Buddhist religious edifice and jinja = Shinto religious edifice) is completely lost on anyone who doesn't happen to know the convention.

I restored a number of links which were deleted. I disagree or simply don't understand the reasoning which informed the edit. Perhaps this can be clarified with a fuller explanation than was possible in the narrow context of an edit summary?--Tenmei (talk) 04:36, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A Movie reference

[edit]

An interesting movie reference with Sangaku at a Shinto shrine: You can see that at the start of the movie

Capitalization

[edit]

Should "Sangaku", appearing as a word in the text of the article, be capitalized? Our article is currently inconsistent on this point. My assumption would be that as an ordinary Japanese word/phrase, borrowed into English, it should be lowercase, but perhaps someone else here knows better than I what conventions apply for Japanese capitalization. —David Eppstein (talk) 07:56, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'd just switch it to lowercase. A web search seems to mostly show lowercase in writing in English, and I can't see any special reason to capitalize it. –jacobolus (t) 19:04, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed with jacobolus. See also MOS:GAMECAPS: things from folk culture, which are rather the opposite of trademarks, should not be capitalized. And MOS:DOCTCAPS: don't capitalize things simply because they have something to do with religion.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  10:05, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per previous - lowercase. Cinderella157 (talk) 03:42, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
