Planning to get to this one in the next couple days or so.

Review: @Alsoriano97: It's a nice article, but needs further work before it can be a Good Article. Please consider implementing the below suggestions within 7 days. Kimikel (talk) 23:30, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Kimikel, nice to meet you. Thanks for your work. I will try to find a space this weekend to make these modifications you propose before the deadline. Greetings. _-_Alsor (talk) 06:53, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello User:Alsoriano97, just wanted to let you know that the 7 days are just an initial deadline, and if you need more time, please just let me know. The article was an interesting read, thanks for nominating Kimikel (talk) 17:25, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Kimikel, your review looks good so far. I'm concerned about the errors you've noticed in the source check, since that suggests to me that the sources haven't been examined carefully by the nominator. Once they've gone through and fixed the problems with dead links, you should follow up on the sources yourself to make sure that they support the information that they're cited for in this article. It seems likely that these non-working links are from an earlier version of the article and the information might have gotten really jumbled up in the intervening edits. Another good reason to go and check the sources to see if they verify the information is that often you'll find there are interesting details that really ought to be in the article, which you wouldn't have known about if you hadn't had a look! -- asilvering (talk) 18:58, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kimikel hello Kimikel. I would need at least one more week, so that this weekend I can dedicate some time to work on this article. Thanks. _-_Alsor (talk) 17:10, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Alsoriano97 Hello, no worries, take your time. Also, if you haven't yet, please see Asilvering's comments above. Thank you - Kimikel (talk) 19:51, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Alsoriano97, are you planning to get to this in the near future? If not I'll probably have to close this review out as a fail due to the issues above and below. I understand if you don't have time, just let me know so I can decide whether or not to keep this review open. Kimikel (talk) 03:23, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Going to fail this one due to its noncompliance with MOS standards, which was an issue pointed out in the last review, and issues with sourcing mentioned above. Kimikel (talk) 17:17, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well-written:

[edit]

Lead

[edit]
  • "Portugal relinquished its last colony Macau, which was handed over to China, and Sampaio played" > Portugal relinquished its last colony, Macau, to China. Sampaio also played  Done
  • Might be worth mentioning his work with the UN in the lead  Done

Early life

[edit]
  • "He attended Queen Elizabeth's School, in São Bento, Lisbon" > He attended Queen Elizabeth's School in São Bento, Lisbon  Done
  • "Jorge Sampaio wanted to enter" > Jorge Sampaio attempted to enroll at  Done
  • "Law course" > "law course"  Done
  • "In his office were the documents..." > start the sentence with "The documents that..." and end it with "...in his office." so it flows better  Done

Political career

[edit]
  • "...radio no-one should leave..."> ...radio that no one left...
  • "left but with little success" > left; however, he had little success.
  • "he successively held" > he held
  • "Vítor Constâncio, who resigned" > Vítor Constâncio, who had resigned
  • "the primaries, after being" > the primaries after being
  • "a left-wing coalition the PS led" > a PS-led left-wing coalition
  • "PEV, the UDP, the MDP/CDE and the PSR" > none of these acronyms are explained in the article, consider just using their full names
  • "Plano Estratégico e do Plano Diretor Municipal (PDM) and of the Plano Especial de Realojamento (PER)" since these aren't wikilinked, you should explain what these are
  • "Sampaio's mandate as mayor" > Sampaio's time as mayor
  • "There was also a historic coincidence: it was the first time" > Historically, this was also the first time that...
  • "Due to this, Sampaio requested" > As a result, Sampaio requested
  • "for a temporary impediment" > due to a temporary impediment
  • "it was the first-such incident" > expand on this. was it the first time a president requested leave? or Sampaio's first such incident with requesting leave? regardless, this should be clarified
  • "In 1998, Sampaio became" > since this paragraph is only a single sentence, merge it with the last paragraph.
  • "referenda: the first was held on 28 June about abortion and" > referendums; the first was held on 28 June, about abortion, and the second was held on 8 November, concerning regionalization.
  • "work on the independence" > work towards the independence
  • "international repercussions due to his confrontation" > did his confrontation with an ambassador cause international repercussions, or his intervention in the independence of East Timor?
  • "Sampaio supported the independence of East Timor" > redundant considering you already mentioned that he was working towards their independence
  • "resignation of Indonesia's President Suharto" > resignation of Suharto, the President of Indonesia,
  • "led to the holding in East Timor of an independence referendum for the province" > led to an independence referendum held in East Timor
  • "militias, and Portugal" > militias. Portugal
  • "19 December, the transfer" > 19 December. The transfer
  • "Sampaio made a farewell" > Sampaio delivered a farewell speech
  • "was doubtful in March of that year because Sampaio refused to take part without the resolution of questions about the territory's future." > had been doubtful, as Sampaio had previously refused to take part without the resolution of concerns regarding the territory's future that March.
  • "Sampaio announced his candidacy" > Sampaio announced his intent to seek reelection... Also, move that footnote to the end of the sentence
  • "on the U.S. cities New York and Washington, D.C."> remove, not necessary
  • " he did not agree with" > he disagreed with
  • "position Portugal"> position that Portugal
  • "the Azores summit" > which Azores summit? explain when and what it was a little bit to contextualize
  • "according to the prime minister" > you never mention that Durao Barroso was prime minister, so this sounds like its a third party. I would replace it with "according to Barroso" or mention earlier that Barroso was PM. Also this needs to be moved to the front of the sentence.

"Sampaio was not competent to decide on" > Sampaio had no control over... Or, if you want to sound fancy, "foreign policy was not in Sampaio's purview"

  • "On 4 April 2002," > merge this with previous paragraph
  • "Sampaio's refusal was met with protests from all left-wing..." the source does not mention anything about protest. Also this seems very broad: every single left-wing party protested?
  • "Sampaio said the new cabinet was not achieving the desired stability and he dissolved the Parliament" > Sampaio claimed this new cabinet had failed to achieve stability; he dissolved it
  • "for February 2005" > in February 2005
  • "Following the PS's absolute majority in this election" > After the PS won an absolute majority in that election,
  • "it is the highest number of conventions of" > it remains the most conventions by

Personal Life

[edit]
  • "Vera Ritta de Sampaio was born in 1975[56] and André Ritta de Sampaio was born in 1980." > "Vera Ritta de Sampaio in 1975[56] and André Ritta de Sampaio in 1980."
  • "bullfighting,[57] and collected" > "bullfighting[57] and collected
  • "He was shy, cried easily, was discreet, had a poor temper, and was altruistic" > He was described as shy, quiet, selfless, and quick-tempered; he also cried often.

Death and funeral

[edit]
  • Wikilink Council of Ministers

Verifiable:

[edit]

A scan through some of the sources revealed the following issues. I would do a full check of all of your sources to ensure that all of them function, and if not, replace or find an archived version of them.

  • "Jorge Sampaio, uma vida em momentos e imagens" needs an archive URL, current page is broken
  • " Royal website photo" is broken
  • " Jorge Sampaio. Um político de lágrima fácil mas de decisões duras" is paywalled
  • "Security Council authorises multinational force in East Timor" error page
  • Kutesa announces the winners of the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize blank page
  • "United Nations News Centre". error page

Broad:

[edit]
  • "Sampaio had a key role in student" > this could be expanded. what specifically did he do that was so key?
  • "In 1999, negotiations for the transfer of sovereignty over Macau to China came to an end" > It seems odd to start this paragraph with the end of negotiations. Did Sampaio have any role in the negotiations themselves? If so, that belongs in the article
  • "In 2004, Sampaio received the Charles V European Award.[12] In 2009, Sampaio was awarded the North–South Prize of the Council of Europe." > Why? What did he do to receive them?
