Guiri is not an ethnic slur
[edit]

"especially with pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes" That's just not true. Many Northern Europeans believe that their physical traits are very exotic or unique in the eyes of Southern Europeans, thus they tend to associate the word guiri with those traits. The truth is that blonde people and blue eyes are not that uncommon in Southern Europe (and there's definitely no significant difference in color of skin).

What truly defines a guiri is dressing in awful style (e.g. sandals with socks), not taking basic precautions when exposed to the summer sun (sunburnts), getting drunk at or even before lunch time, and generally behaving like an obnoxious tourist.

However, the term guiri is very often used in a broader sense to refer to all tourists and ex-pats of any race or condition, excluding immigrants from poorer countries. Drar3g (talk) 07:46, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion based

The last two paragraphs of the main sections are completely opinion based, without citing any source. One of the Wikipedia "Five pillars" state Wikipedia is not a primary source of information. --Pabloab (talk) 20:28, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Guiri is not xenophobe

[edit]

Guiri is a coloquial term in spain, that not always is used as a pejorative and it doesn't express direct rejection to foreigners. Also, it's not only used for "northern europeans" (as if there weren't spaniard that are blond with blue eyes). This article needs a lot of reworking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.127.170.26 (talk) 15:35, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The citations mention this to be derogatory. That does not mean it is always a sur, but is so used often enough to be notes as such. Often slurs are reclaimed by the target group. If this has occurred and is noted in a citation, then we can add that to the article. I did a quick web search and most say it is at least not a polite word.
