I'm thinking of creating a City of Truro category on Commons and linking to it, rather than have so many images here. Any views? --Old Moonraker (talk) 16:13, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That would allow removal of the gallery/pics, which aren't up to much anyway. The other three can stay (although a close-up of the builder's plate would be better than the long-distance shot we have now). EdJogg (talk) 16:55, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Changes - 21/11/2009

I've made several changes and additions, with citations for the new material. Please review.

I removed the reference to Flying Scotsman as there are several claims around the world for 100 mph between 1904 and 1934, including some in the UK - and there is some doubt whether Flying Scotsman reached 100 mph. I also removed the reference to first in Europe whilst making it clear that there are other contenders around the world.

Speed record

It is stated that, due to the accuracy of the timing in that period, perhaps City of Truro had only nudged 100mph. However, the record is 'for the first locomotive to have reached 100mph'. If, over that timed 1/4 mile there had been ANY variation in speed (which there must have been), then she would have had to have achieved a peak speed in excess of 100mph at some point just to attain the average. Now consider the last two timing sections (totalling 1/2 mile). These also indicate an average speed of about 100mph given the timing accuracies of the day. However, even given those tolerances, if Truro had entered the last 1/2 mile at (say) 96mph, she would have had to have achieved a speed at some point well in excess of 100mph at some point to have made up the deficit.Hippocrocopig (talk) 21:41, 12 July 2017 (UTC)hippocrocopig[reply]

The article contained the following: "If exact, this time would correspond to a speed of 102.3 mph (164.6 km/h); but Rous-Marten's stopwatch read in multiples of 15 second, so the next possible longer time it could register was 9 seconds, corresponding to exactly 100 mph[dubiousdiscuss]." The meaning is clear. Rous-Marten recorded 8.8 seconds for a quarter mile. Because his stop watch only measured fifths of seconds the actual time was between 8.6 seconds and 9 seconds. 8.6 seconds corresponds to 104.6 mph. 9 seconds is exactly 100 mph.
Please note that the statement, "City of Truro was measured to travel at 102.3 mph and the accuracy was such that the minimum speed was in excess of 100 mph." is true and accurate. But better is the statement that City of Truro's speed was measured at 102.3 ± 2.3 mph. Rous-Marten's readings are not inconsistent with an actual speed of 104½ mph. The reason for this diversion is the tag [dubiousdiscuss]. The sentence was not dubious so I have now removed the tag. But it also said, "discuss" and so this is the requested discussion. As a follow-up, O S Nock, in Speed Records on British Railways, discusses this at length in the appendix. As an experienced train-timer himself, he plotted the speeds on a graph against the gradient and gets a smooth acceleration curve so concludes that even within the limits of accuracy of the stopwatches of the time, the top speed of 102.3mph is entirely feasible. A statement of the bleeding obvious.

In the Construction and modifications section are the following two statements:

  1. All ten were named after cities on the GWR system;
  2. It is named for Truro, a city in Cornwall.

When the second statement was first added it was reverted as being redundant. The re-revert has the tag. "Helping out 99.99 percent of people who never heard of Truro" I suspect that it is helping the 0.01% who don't realise that Truro is a city within the GWR area. But since these are the people who cannot understand the first statement then further explanation is probably not useful. My real objection is that the statement not only adds nothing and is ugly but it says nothing about the significance of Truro. (Sole Cornish city, County town) I'll try to improve it tomorrow unless someone deletes it first OrewaTel (talk) 03:51, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Many people have heard of this locomotive, City of Truro, and several of these can give the numbeer as either 3440 or 3717, but only a small proportion of these are aware that the loco was merely the eighth in a class of ten. How many people have heard of City of Bath, the first to be built? How many can name all of the ten named after cities? How many more can name the "other" ten (original numbers 3400-9, 1912 numbers 3700-9)? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:12, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends

City of Truro is a character in The Railway Series books and the Thomas & Friends TV series. Consequently the category "Category:Thomas & Friends characters" was added. This has ben reverted twice with no explanation. Unless an explanation is given, I must reinstate this category. OrewaTel (talk) 07:44, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst I am not obliged by law to reinstate any edit, there is an imperative to reinstate any reasonable edit that has been deleted without explanation. A general link to a 6,000 word article is not an explanation. Possibly buried within WP:WAF there is a good reason for the reversion but it would be far simpler to state it here.
