Community Consensus

[edit]

Every Day Is Exactly the Same is noted as an EP by the official Nine Inch Nails website (nin.com), but some (like me) still dispute this, claiming that "EDIETS is a song that's being promoted from a record: it is a single, regardless of the designation the accompanying release is given." (seen below).

I wish for the community to come to a clear consensus. Single or EP? TonySt 15:54, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Votes for Single

[edit]

Single - per arguments above. --TonySt 15:54, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Votes for EP

[edit]

EP - I feel that if Trent says it is an EP... it's an EP... regardless if there is a radio single.... it even says on the front sticker.... "The With Teeth Remix EP", good enough for me. DMighton 14:22, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

EP - No accompanying video so far, unlike all previous singles (although it may later appear as other 'aborted' NIN videos have), plus it compiles B-sides from past singles. Like the sticker says, this is a remix release, it just happens to tie in with the radio single. BotleySmith 02:58, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

EP - Singles haven't been commercially released in the US in any physical format for more than 5 years now. This is officially documented as the companion EP to "With Teeth" and I think the article and all related discographies need to reflect that. Alkaline5 03:01, 12 February 2007

Oh, man. I really hate to vacilitate after being a staunch pro-single advocate, but I'll be damned if Every Day Is Exactly the Same isn't being sold with a sticker promoting it as the the remix companion to With Teeth (a la Fixed, Further Down the Spiral, Things Falling Apart). This despite Reznor's earlier claim that there probably wouldn't be a remix companion to With Teeth [1]. I was wrong in claiming the release should be subordinated to the song; I guess that's what happens when you make up your mind before having the release in hand.

So, what the hell? Maybe the article should have two infoboxes? Make the primary infobox the EP/Album infobox at the top of the page, and then made a separate section ("The Song") and put the single infobox there without a cover image? - Rynne 13:50, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds vaguely like the "Closer to God" dispute... iguana_nirvana14 (talk · contribs)

Single or EP

[edit]

This release has been labeled by Nine Inch Nails and even within this article as an EP, but it being considered a single by the info-bar thing on the right of the article. Should that be changed to an EP? - Jermdeeks 18:24, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd call it both, actually :-) TonySt 21:35, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My personal feeling is that it should use the single infobox. "Every Day Is Exactly the Same" (the song) is a single from With Teeth; it's been released for radio airplay, gone to #1 on US singles charts, etc. At very least, I think a single infobox should be used for consistency, since every other similar NIN page uses the singles infoboxes. Some other points:
  • I think it's better to consider this a page about the song than about the release—which suggests using the single infobox. If someone's thinking of "Every Day Is Exactly the Same", it's more likely they're thinking of the song itself and not the release named for the song.
  • Consider: on the "Only" infobox, you have the singles chronology, and the "next single" field leads—quite correctly—to this page. If EDIETS is a single for the purposes of the singles chronology, shouldn't it have a singles infobox?
  • The definition of single/EP is fuzzy, and I don't necessarily know that nin.com's designation should be considered final say; nin.com also says Closer to God is a single despite being 20 minutes longer than Broken, which they call an EP. What makes one a single and the other not?
I think it's better to follow common sense. EDIETS is a song that's being promoted from a record: it is a single, regardless of the designation the accompanying release is given. - Rynne 19:06, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good points. I'm not familiar enough with infoboxes to change it, but I'd endorse the change if someone made it. --TonySt 22:40, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's been changed back-and-forth a few times already. I'd like to arrange a vote or a consensus on which style it should be, to get a definitive answer whether the single or album infobox should be used. - Rynne 00:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't you use an album infobox... in the album infobox you can change it to say "EP"... that would be simple. DMighton 02:39, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unindented reply to DMighton: The single infobox has additional single-specific fields, like the parent album and chart positions. There are other issues regarding its classification, too, like how the EDIETS release will be linked in other articles' chronologies, and its placement on the discography. - Rynne 04:44, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maxi single?

[edit]

Is there no case for calling it a maxi single, or is this term archaic/not used outside the UK? I always thought it was a maxi single anyway... Extar 02:32, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
