Problem with some statements made in the article...

"and it is the only tricking-technique using a weapon which can be observed in Q3A-deathmatch competition" with regards to rocket jumping. This is not true, plasma climbing and grenade jumping can be used (particularly with the battle suit). In fact, an example of plasma climbing in DM is actually shown in the movie Get Quaked 3. Perhaps someone ought to rectify this?

Hi, are there any references actually for this mod itself? (And not just related subjects like trickjumping and Doom 3). From Wikipedia:Notability (software): The software package has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the company itself. Wouldn't want to see all this hard work get deleted. Marasmusine 23:04, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Sotamaa .pdf is broken, by the way: to quote Acrobat: "The file is damaged and could not be repaired." Marasmusine 23:10, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did you have a look at the references page? http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/0,1518,398958,00.html This article might be in german but it's clearly about defrag... In that article there's a reference to an issue of GEE, an (also german) gaming magazine. I do not possess this very issue unfortunately. Is that the kind of reference you'd like to see? If not, there's also something going on at the university of munich, but i think it hasn't been published yet. Don't be overhasty. 85.212.37.108 23:15, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, for me Stamaa.pdf works. 85.212.37.108 23:17, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did have a look, but I have no idea if Spiegel online is a notable source, and like you say it's in German :>. It would be nice to reference the GEE issue, since multiple sources are required. Perhaps one of the guys at Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer and video games/Magazines could track it down? Marasmusine 23:36, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here I got the version of the article which they saved in their archieves. http://www.geemag.de/relaunch_storyseite.php?story=69&ausgabe=19 ... I dunno whether it's the same story in the magazine. Whatever... if you seriously need a translation of both articles grant me time. My english is rather bad :) 85.212.37.108 00:14, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That should certainly be added to the references. I wasn't sure on WP's policy on foreign-language sources, so I checked Wikipedia:Citing sources; it seems to be okay (although an English translation would be preferable.) Marasmusine 00:23, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

References on DeFRaG

[edit]

Kringiel 2006a and b are almost completely about DeFRaG. It is especially stressed that DeFRaG and its community have taken the violence out of a first-person shooter game. Besides describing DeFRaG and trickjumping at length as a culture in its own right, and quoting from interviews the author has done with DeFRaG performers, the article goes on throwing it as an argument into the "computer games and violence" discussion. Kringiel 2006a was published in GEE, which is a German computer and video games print-magazine comparable to Great Britain's EDGE. GEE has a current print run of close to 25,000 copies per issue. A revised and augmented version of Kringiel 2006a was published as Kringiel 2006b at Spiegel online. "Der Spiegel (English: The Mirror) is Europe's biggest and Germany's most influential weekly magazine, published in Hamburg, with a circulation of around one million per week." (from Wikipedia's entry Der Spiegel ;-) Spiegel online is its online presence. Furthermore DeFRaG is mentioned in the academical paper by Olli Sotamaa and therein described as being exceptional. I quote: "A clear majority of modifications can be named either deathmatch mods or teamplay mods, or in certain cases both of them. Still, there are a couple of significant exceptions to this: for example The Dark Conjunction mod aims to bring a whole new story driven single-player adventure to Quake III players and DeFRaG is basically a training mod designed to improve gamer’s skills in various areas." (Sotamaa 2003: 9) So, first of all DeFRaG is subject of an article in a German print-magazine on games. Secondly this article has been deemed so noteworthy that the editors of the online presence of Europe's biggest and Germany's most influential news magazine have decided to publish a revised version of it. Thirldly DeFRaG has not only been mentioned in an academical paper, but was called to be exceptional therein. Furthermore an academical paper is in preparation which deals almost exclusively with DeFRaG, and which will be printed in an anthology consisting of academical papers dealing with the shooter-genre. zeph 10:26, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Release date

When was this mod first released? --Mika1h (talk) 15:07, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GT-Agressor: I see release of oldest maps for defrag on q3a.ath.cx

http://q3a.ath.cx/?mapdetails=ksjt1 - 2000-05-11 (i know, why sjt2 has №2 ;)

http://q3a.ath.cx/?mapdetails=madness - 2000-06-26

http://q3a.ath.cx/?mapdetails=fdcj2 - 2000-10-08 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.50.170.150 (talk) 19:20, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Those old release dates maybe wrong because it is just the date of the pk3 file. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.187.109.107 (talk) 21:33, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bunny hopping: unclear

[edit]

Maybe a remark for the Bunny hopping page as well, but there is something unclear in the DeFRaG following part: The most common techniques included in Q3A and DeFRaG itself includes bunny-hopping, air strafing, strafe-jumping, circle-jumping, ramp-jumping, etc. Bunny-hopping is the most basic method of fast movement in which player is jumping repeatedly instead of running in order to move faster.

It is IMHO unclear how Bunny hopping relate to e.g. strafe-jumping. Simply jumping repeatedly does not, AFAIK, make you move faster. You have to add some trick to it, like strafe-jumping, if you want speed. So is Bunny hopping a category meant to include all the tricks that make you move faster while repeatedly jumping? Or is it something different than strafe-jumping, an other trick really, as the sentence quoted suggests? (In which case it should be mentioned basically what you have to do to be "bunny hopping", I guess simply jumping is not enough.) Does it only apply with modified physics, as the reference suggests?

I don't know the answer but the explanation could anyway be made clearer in the article IMHO. OlivierMiR (talk) 11:03, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but bunnyhopping and strafejumping are two different things. Bunnyhopping, which was in QuakeWorld, Quake 2 and Half-Life 1 games is using the jump and strafe keys, and strafejumping, which is in Quake 3, is using jump, strafe and forward keys. The main difference is that strafe jumping is faster but harder to control, while bunnyhopping lets you do things like figure 8s much easier.
CPMA, a mod for Quake 3 (which is often used with Defrag), adds bunnyhopping to Quake 3.
Circle-jumping is the beginning of a bunnyhop/strafejump and its purpose is to set a fast speed instead of building up from normal jump speed. Ramp-jumping is the ability to 'glide' up a ramp when moving at speed. This might have been added to CPMA, I'm not sure if it is in Quake 3
I'm not too familiar with the Defrag scene, so I don't know if Q3A or CPMA was used more often
