Correction on name change

[edit]

I have changed 'he changed his name to his mother's maiden name in 1914' to 'he changed his name to his paternal grandmother's name...' - his mother's maiden name was Rebecca Mocatta. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.26.206.237 (talk) 17:00, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In the context of the period (1914), he changed his very German name (Schloss = Castle) into something more English. Take the y off and you actually have Wales. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.214.153.4 (talk) 11:05, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recently the file File:Arthur David Waley; (Giles) Lytton Strachey; (Helen) Hope Mirrlees; Georges Cattaui by Lady Ottoline Morrell.jpg (right) was uploaded and it appears to be relevant to this article and not currently used by it. If you're interested and think it would be a useful addition, please feel free to include it. I'm not sure which of the people he is, however - if I did I could create a cropped version of him. Update: Another image including Waley. This one's labelled so I'm pretty sure he's the guy on the left, which also makes him the sitting man in the picture above. Am I right? Dcoetzee 04:57, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pound

[edit]

Pound should not be allowed to have the last word on Waley (see D. Keene on Waley).-Radh (talk) 11:57, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Or the first word. Jackaroodave (talk) 23:55, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency

[edit]

The page read:

In 1918, he met Beryl de Zoete, a dance critic and writer; they lived together until her death in 1962. In 1966, Arthur Waley married Alison Robinson, whom he had first met in 1929. They lived in Highgate in London, and she became a familiar figure in later years, living beyond the age of 100.

This has Arthur Waley living in two places at once. If he did have two homes, it should be noted. Otherwise, this should be assumed to be an inconsistency, to be re-introduced to the page once rectified. Bamkin (talk) 12:01, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV in lead

[edit]

I hope that the rephrasing meets the objections raised. I suggest this edit after reading WP:NPOV. Under the section "words to watch, the policy says to avoid the word "claim" since it is "an expression of doubt." The policy directs us to "achieve the Neutral Point of View" by giving "information about the significant opinions that have been expressed about the subjects ... attributed ... to particular sources..." Since the opinion is sourced, not in the voice of Wikipedia, and reflects the general evaluation of Waley's work and place, it should be acceptable.ch (talk) 01:02, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Removing "claimed" is good. My edit was to remove the "as X said" formulation which explicitly says "this encyclopaedia agrees with what X said", and I should have used a different word in what I rewrote. I think the second section of the quote is still excessive. It is obviously important that he was self taught but we can do that in the voice of the encyclopaedia rather than reporting that someone else said it. The lead has 113 words right now, of which 63 are copied from one source; this violates WP:UNDUE. 84.53.70.94 (talk) 07:16, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Point well taken. The lead was indeed skimpy, so I Googled and easily found a new source (and a rich one) and expanded the lead slightly. In the process I corrected a mis-spelled name and added 3 Ways of Thought, an important work. The article, however, is still inadequate to the subject, and I hope that you or others can further expand it, perhaps using the Johns article, which is available for free at the British Library website in the link.
Thanks for bringing this up, although it would have been even better to go beyond constructive criticism to expand and correct the article. If you are new to Wikipedia, as I surmise from your own Talk Page, you might be surprised how easy it is! Cheers in any case.ch (talk) 18:06, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
