"We're trying to strengthen the connection," says John Norquist, former mayor of Milwaukee (1998 to 2003) and current president of the
Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU).
(A transit-oriented development, or TOD, is a TND built around a mass transit station, so that residents can walk to the station and commute to work.) Although these terms are still used to describe particular types of developments, they have been absorbed into the broader term of new urbanism, coined in 1993 with the founding of the
Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), an umbrella organization bringing together a variety of disciplines.
In neighboring Mississippi, the
Congress for the New Urbanism, led by the irrepressible Andres Duany (of Seaside, Florida, fame), recently completed an extensive design charrette to provide guidance to that state, equally hard hit by the storm.
The market premium enjoyed by new urban projects is well-recognized (Eppli and Tu 1999; Song and Knaap 2003) and celebrated as a selling point by the
Congress for the New Urbanism (New Urban News 2003).
The
Congress for the New Urbanism, founded in z993, declares on its Web site that "all development should be in the form of compact, walkable neighborhoods." New Urbanists eagerly helped write zoning codes that forbade things that had previously been mandated--broad streets, low densities, separation of residential from commercial uses while mandating things that had formerly been forbidden, such as narrow streets, high densities, and mixed uses.
The Urbanism and Planning Group will pay due regard to the work of the
Congress for the New Urbanism and the recently formed Congress for European Urbanism, as well as other local and international schools of thought.
