Deforestation and land use changes in deferent slope position cause cation exchange capacity to be decreased.
The exchangeable calcium (Ca) and the magnesium (Mg) were determined by tetrimetric method, while the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the total exchangeable bases (TEB) were computed from the analyzed result of the soil bases.
The cation exchange capacity (CEC) was estimated by the ammonium acetate method (Gomes, 1986) which comprises saturating clays by ammonium acetate solution, where the non-adsorbed N[H.sub.4.sup.+] ions are drained with 96% ethyl alcohol and the ions fixed upon clays are dosed with 0.1 N hydrochlorid acid in the presence of green bromocresol as coloured indicator.
The strongest relationship was between mean seed weight and cation exchange capacity ([ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 6 OMITTED], Kendall [Tau]-b correlation coefficient = 0.54, P = 0.046, n = 9), in which on average larger seeds were produced by shrubs at sites with higher cation exchange capacity.
Indeed, because the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the SSa of the smectite are important, all the cations are not totally exchanged with [H.sup.+], and therefore a longer time is needed to fill all the sites with [H.sup.+] cations.
These resulted to samples with increased surface area, adsorption capacity, and reduced cation exchange capacity. The activation process could be described by the product layer diffusion kinetic model with activation energy of 24.98 kJ/mol.
In the case of pure clay, the augment of the pH values may be attributed to (i) the cation exchange capacity of clay surfaces which can adsorb free aqueous protons from the solution and release other cations (mainly [Na.sup.+] and [K.sup.+]), (ii) the release of O[H.sup.-] ions, which were previously adsorbed when 1M NaOH had been added to adjust the initial pH value and successively replaced by Cr(VI) oxoanions, and (iii) the adsorption process at higher pH values which can transfer negative charge on the already negatively charged surface of pure clay, inducing the adsorption of hydrogen ions from the solution.
However increase in negative charge visa-vis cation exchange capacity and soil fertility can be achieved by adding organic matter or by increasing the natural soil pH by liming.
The cation exchange capacity of Wyoming bentonite is 76.65 meq/100 grams of clay (Merabishvili, 1979).
where CEC is the cation exchange capacity in [cmol.sub.c] [kg.sup.-1] and the Na concentration is in the same unit.
Cation exchange capacity was also significantly (p<0.05) higher on the crop residue treated plots.
where CEC is the cation exchange capacity and [E.sub.x Na] and [E.sub.x Ca] are the activity of exchange phase of Na and Ca, respectively.
