DOOM: The Dark Ages was just revealed and looks absolutely spectacular. In fantastic news for the PlayStation faithful, id Software's next explosive shooter has been announced as coming to PS5 on day one, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revealed to whom we owe this good fortune.
Sitting down with IGN's Ryan McCaffrey, Spencer revealed that the plan has been to bring the next DOOM to PlayStation for a few years now: "It's a franchise that I think everyone deserves to play. When I met with Marty [Stratton] a couple of years ago, I asked what he wanted to do, and he said he wanted to sell it on all platforms. Simple as that."
Simple as that. DOOM: The Dark Ages is a prequel, telling an origin story of sorts for the DOOM Slayer. The shift to an earlier era looks like it will introduce all kinds of wonderful bladed and blunt instruments of destruction, along with the best-in-class gunplay you'd expect from the legendary development house.
Are you looking forward to getting to grips with DOOM: The Dark Ages in 2025? In the comments section below, show your appreciation to good guys Stratton and Spencer.

Hard agree here, but it's my favorite franchise. The original game still lives on through games like Selaco and mods. Hell, I still play some version of 90s Doom (OG, 2, 64) most days. I wish there was a way that the hacker ethos could live on with modern Doom. If you don't know what I mean by that, I strongly suggest you check out the book Masters of Doom. The stories in that book from the early days of id are just nuts. And Doom Guy, John Romero's autobiography.
Yeah Doom looked good and at 8:26 of the IGN interview he says you are going to see more of our games on other platforms so I guess it is just a matter of time until they announce more ports lol.
World's favorite liar.
@GymratAmarillo from he opened his mouth I said he’s gonna kill XBOX. Oddly enough, Sony fans have always wanted Sony leaders to be like Phil. But look where it got XBOX 🤷🏾♂️
Marty said he wanted doom on all platforms, Phil then cancelled the ps5 version. Satya overruled phil and took his executive washroom privileges away.
In other words we're going 3rd party and as Doom is already 3rd party we might as well release it day 1 on PS5.
I kinda like Ryan, but it's sad to see him pucker up for Phil in his interviews.
So if it's "simple as that", I guess the directors of the other (at least timed) exclusives said "nah screw the Playsation gamers, let's keep our game exclusive."
Lol why it feels like Phil talking as if there's a plan to make Doom as Xbox exclusives but someone from IdS said "are you nuts?!" to Phil face and showed a paper of how good Doom 2016 and Eternal sales numbers for PS4.
Anyway. Doom series is always been multiplat and every single PS console, except PS2, has Doom games.
I'm glad Stratton put his foot down and wanted Doom to stay multiplatform.
@MrMagic true, however and more importantly to me was when he said. GP is not teaching people to not buy games, and over the last few years sales of games on Xbox are way up to an all time high, GP is a choice and so is buying games and they are choices for the players to make. SO….. for all the stay a home CEO’s online that say’s GP is the push and that it is crushing MS into losing money. I would listen to that section of the interview cause that just got squashed. I found the interview really fun and informative. I think it’s safe to say all 3 consoles are alive and well and gaming will get out of this reshape it’s seen this year and continue to be the best form of story telling entertainment in the world.
@MrMagic I’ll give a bonus point i thought was well needed. Phil said, 8 years ago when i said games are coming to Xbox and PC the internet said this would hurt us and now we have a STRONG business on the PC and it’s growing and when you buy a PC game you get the Xbox version as well and when you buy the Xbox version you get a PC copy. Giving players choices of where to play has been the goal. I am not sure how that is not reviewed as a great thing. Furthermore I’d like to add Sony needs to do this. It would grow them on PC a lot as well which in the future might just be necessary revenue.
This is important, keeping your developers happy. I'm sure Coalition and Playground will be thrilled for Playstation players to play Gears and Fable when they inevitably come
Of all the games which changed hands in the acquisition, the only game that hurt a bit to lose was the Doom franchise. Eternal was amazing.
Glad to hear it will be available to all of us.
The dude actually does interviews. You all can fanboy away everything this guy's says all you want but the reality is Sony has literally never had a leader that has sat down and done interviews and q&a sessions this generation let alone display a clear passion for gaming and respect for their fandom.
Xbox has had some pretty big disappointments the last few years but they still show up and answer tough questions and still at least try to engage the journalists and fans. Sony should take Notes because the way I see it, Xbox only needs a few decent hits and a good year or two to regain ground. If that means going more gamer friendly and having some of their suite be multiplatform thats good for the business and fans. So too will be the case if the pretty much confirmed by Spencer Ms handheld with offline support emerges.
@KundaliniRising333 "Xbox only needs a few decent hits" I mean All their games come to PC especially the likes of Fable, Indiana Jones what's the point of owning that green plastic box lol
@KundaliniRising333 The problem with too many interviews is that it has shot Phil and MS in the foot. Gets to the point he says different things to different interviewers and the actions as well as the words dont match.
Sony is smart to pick their battles in the interview front.
Lot of the time the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing.
Xbox presentation was far better than sony no games I wanted to play at sony state of play only sh2 and xbox had gears sony has socom and won't bother remaking it
Oh good. Phil is allowing us to still play Doom out of the goodness of his heart. What a hero!!!!
So the message is:
Buy Sony PS5 to play Sony / PS5 Exclusives, MS games, and Third party games
Buy our platform to play MS games, and Third party, whilst completely missing out on Sony / PS5 Exclusives, but you will feel better knowing all MS games will be played by everyone!!
Thats what I and many others read....
If i owned a Series console and not a PS5 right now, I would not be raving online about "how this benefits everyone"... i would be selling my xbox to buy a PS5 before the sale/trade-in price drops.
But it is funny that as a PS5 owner MS enjoy giving me good news (providing the game is more 2016, less eternal).
@AsterZero This.
@KundaliniRising333 "Sony should take Notes because the way I see it, Xbox only needs a few decent hits and a good year or two to regain ground"
You want Sony to take notes from Phil who inconsistent between his words and actions? Lmao. One day Phil said Spider-Man and Helldivers 2 exclusives for PS isn't helping gaming industry. But he himself cancelled Redfall and Starfield for PS5 and then made Hellblade 2 as Xbox exclusives. Now he's forced to released some Xbox 1st party games on PS5 because that $70 billion to acquired ACB and stagnant growth for GamePass doesn't looks good at all for MS financial.
So, I rather Sony don't take notes from MS / Phil especially when comes to interview. I want Sony just focus on working to deliver those good games for PS owners rather than talking a lot of nonsense to get brownie points but then delivered mediocre games which is what MS / Phil did with Xbox.
In what respect has he lied, @GymratAmarillo? Just curious...
Thing is, when Xbox acquired Bethesda, they did famously say, 'case by case basis' when determining whether games would be exclusive or multi-platform. I think it safe to say that those that gamed on an Xbox assumed that was trying to keep the PlayStation crowd placated (unsuccessfully) by allowing them to think some of their favourite titles would still be coming. Whilst also keeping Xbox gamers happy, by making them believe that games would be exclusive.
So, what has happened here is he has been true to his word, because he also said that where there was an existing community then the games would still come over. Doom is an existing franchise, so this fits in with that statement. Other games, like Starfield had no existing fanbase anywhere, hence keeping it as an exclusive (for now, but just watch this September!) was also compatible with the statement.
Now, it is entirely possible that when the statements were made, there was no intention of porting the likes of Doom, and that things have changed at Team Xbox, such as being so far being in consoles sold and userbase, as well as Spencer no longer being in charge with Nadella having now taken the reigns, but in all honesty, knowing how long developing a game for a different platform takes, this decision would have taken quite some time back, so I for one am prepared to give Spencer the benefit of the doubt on this one...
I am very glad about this. It's one thing keeping Halo exclusive to Xbox, it would be another to gatekeep Doom.
This makes me a very happy bunny. One of the few games I was worried about not getting . It does beg the question, why buy them for billions if you're going to share the games anyway
@HonestHick good posts! I also thought it was an informative interview, and agree with almost everything you said except the last line. I don’t think Sony does need to do the same as Xbox here. Sony makes most of their money through PlayStation and PSN whereas Microsoft is happy if gamers are playing on Xbox or Microsoft Windows, they win either way.
I think we are in a nice position where all the three console platform holders are doing something slightly different but each seeing some different type of success. E.g. Nintendo makes the least revenue of the three but has by far the highest profit margin, Sony is the exact opposite, the most revenue but a slightly worryingly low profit margin for a while and Microsoft is somewhere in the middle. Good to see imo.
@themightyant Thanks, i thought it was a great interview and it answered some needed questions. Here is why i disagree with ya on Sony. If and when gaming see’s it next big shift away from the console more and more and it is happening slowly. Younger kids aren’t asking for consoles and the ones that are want games that can be bought once and played every where and have their saves and data move with them. If cloud takes off more in the future for casuals which it will, Sony will have to move away from the older console model and when they do that they will be looking up at a 3-4 headed monster in MS, cause they will have those customers, games, tech and software running a 3-4 platform ecosystem. I am not saying all this happens tomorrow, it’s out slowly building towards the future of tech and where players want to be. Sony is smart to pick up some extra cash on the PC, but they need to also do more with their software and services. Again great show yesterday, i do believe in the current state all 3 are doing well and gaming is getting back to being fun again. I hope Nintendo has a few surprises for us. 😀
So other games don’t deserve to be played by everyone? Bit of a weird line.
@HonestHick I never watched the interview but they are always contradicting themselves.

Remember people, if it can't play DOOM, it is not a thing. Them's the rules.
@KundaliniRising333 "Phil actually does interviews"....what,the same Phil Spencer that'd been in hiding when the studio closures got announced & left the P.R Waffle to Matt Booty etc ?🤔
As for his "hard hitting interview",by Ryan McCaffrey,I hear you reply? This is the same "objective journalist"/IGN Editor,who just a couple of days ago falsely tweeted "Sony must've money hatted Black Myth: Wukong exclusivity",only to delete it & refuse to acknowledge his biased opinion rather than it being "optimisation issues" (reads Series S)....nor did he press Phil Spencer on how devs are having issues trying to achieve parity between Series S/X ...
But then again,this is the same Ryan McCaffrey who cheerled the buyouts of Zenimax Bethesda & Activision Blizzard,buyouts but let him give the nice guy Phil double Dutch P.R. answer on mass layoffs? Hardly an interview!
As for the "they were planning multiplatform years ago!",yeah there was a lot more releases planned to be multiplatform...until Phil Spencer cancelled them despite his public promises & "case by case" claims...until seemingly being dragged by his heels by the Microsoft board into reversing course in more recent times!🙄
I don't disagree that we'll see that much change with Hermen Hulst as far as public engagement goes...he's no Shawn Layden!
@MrMagic i can tell you didn’t watch it. Thats why i gave you so info.
@Rich33
Obviously can't speak for others but as a PS5 and Xbox Series X owner myself, I'll keep the Xbox because as of now it still does have a few console exclusives, but if it gets to the point where every MS-owned IP shows up on PS5, I'd still keep playing those games on Xbox because I've put a lot of money into that ecosystem over the years. I'll buy the next Xbox for the same reason. Of course, if I was new to gaming, right now the choice is PlayStation over Xbox with Nintendo as a nice complimentary option.
@Gamer83
Fair point.
I just dont like the whole "its a good thing our exclusives are going to other platforms, then everyone can play them" line from Xbox or its fanboys - its clear MS are are forcing this for a quick payout.
Dont get me wrong - Sony arent exactly doing a good job with their lack of 1st party games atm either (and their porting to PC).
@Rich33
I also don't love seeing PlayStation and Xbox sharing their IP with eachother or Nintendo. On the other hand, releasing their games on their own consoles but also having a PC version for day one? Don't really have a problem with that, two very different markets.
You know if Sony bought Bethesda they wouldn't be putting doom on Xbox
@PuppetMaster did you laugh your ass off?
@Toot1st Yeah thanks to your daddy Phil Spinner :3
Yeah, no, Phil.
You had no choice. That's the fact of the matter.
Doom, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are three Bethesda/id games that will cause you a lot of bad press if they went exclusive. I, for one, would not buy an Xbox just to play them and would be very bitter towards Microsoft as a result. Those were previously multiplatform games that belong to the fans across all platforms they were published.
Those games will sell much better if they're widely available. Phil Spencer isn't doing anyone and favours here.
How do you know is Phil Spencer is lying? His lips are moving.
@MattBoothDev MS wouldn’t have gotten any more bad press than when Sony money hats, the difference these are now Microsoft franchises where Sony doesn’t own their third party exclusives
It’s simple …this was done because Xbox sales are tanking and Game Pass isn’t growing plus spending $70B for ABK
Every Ms game will go multiplat even Fable, Gears, PD etc
That being said I don’t really care, if Microsoft keeps dropping games like Doom then I’m glad they’re going multiplat because Xbox guys don’t buy games, Playststion gamers actually do buy games and MS wants to sell their games not just have people play them on Game Pass
