"A remarkable survival horror" -PC Gamer

Madness has arrived...

Total Chaos is a total conversion mod for Doom 2 that runs on the GZDoom source port. The mod is a survival horror set on a remote island known as Fort Oasis. The island was once run by a community of coal miners which one day suddenly disappeared, leaving behind the abandoned concrete jungle to waste away.

Something, clearly, has gone very wrong with this place. Upon your arrival at Fort Oasis, you receive a strange radio transmission. Someone wants to be found. Survive in 6 chapters, against over 8 horrifying fiends with a large assortment of weapons. The mod with the assistance of the source ports introduces many new graphical features, including 3D models and high resolution textures.

Something, clearly, has gone very wrong with this place. Upon your arrival at Fort Oasis, you receive a strange radio transmission. Someone wants to he found. The further you travel into the concrete jungle, the more the situation ends up unraveling, and where you were heading is no longer clear. Find letters scattered around the world and uncover the mystery of what happened.

Survive in 6 chapters

Explore the island of Fort Oasis in 6 chapters. In these chapters you will fight through apartments, utility tunnels, shopping centers, before reaching the city center and the mines that await you.

Fight against horrifying fiends

In every chapter, you will encounter new and even more horrifying creations. Each one processing their own unique attack patterns. Learning these is vital to surviving the oncoming onslaught.

Dispatch of them with a large assortment of weapons

Use anything you can find on the island to fight against the forces of evil. There are guns, but ammo for them is incredibly hard to come by. You will mostly be relying on tireirons, pickaxes, shivs and garden tools. Most of these can be crafted and some can be upgraded to wield more powerful blows.

The mod with the assistance of the source ports introduces many new graphical features, including 3D models and high resolution textures.

Today I'm revealing some stuff a friend and I have been working on in sort of secret for the last couple of years. A remaster of Total Chaos is indeed in the works, and is using the Unreal Engine 5.

Here is how it is shaping up!

No announcements for release dates at this time (still a couple years away), however the game will be dropping as its own standalone package.

Would be nice to be able to release things like this as a "game" but if I remember correctly there is a lot in the code of the ports that makes it illegal right? Or am I wrong?

Yes. Nothing sounds better than paying for mods done with open source tools, for open source tech and advertised on a mods page, that is free and for purposes of sharing for free. Actually, let's stop the open source thing and ask for gazillions of dollars or euros, for tech with 23 years old, to be developed and ported. That's the dream...

It would be illegal if we sold this as a stand-alone product, as the source code for Doom was released to be used non-commercially as far as I'm aware.

However we can make the mod run without the requirement of owning Doom II, as the original IWAD files are only needed for game assets and barely anything engine related.

The DOS source code was only licensed to be used non-commercially. Recent source ports are based on the original Linux port which is GPL, allowing it to be used commercially.

Wasn't aware of that, will have to look into it.
Still plan on making this one free, we may make a stand-alone version in the future, but we'll see how the mod goes first! :D

I was reading about purchasing a license for the engine for $500 and even tried contacting ID software but I didn't get a response. You may be able to sell a wad if you include a box with box art and extras and "just give people the game" I don't know how else to do it XD

Yeah, I meant commercial, it'd be awesome to see this on steam.

Even if a port retains no original Doom/engine code though, I believe there was an issue about some third party code that prohibits commercial use so you'd still have to work that out or find out what parts work this way and remove them.

Yeah it'd be a **** ton of work so you're right it's best to not go there yet. I'll be happy see this moving along for GZDoom (if that's what you're going with)
