I've used Qwest/CenturyLink for my ISP since 2001. Around the turn of the century, their service was horrible and undependable. I thought about switching to cable since day-one, but hung in there, for whatever reason - slothfulness, most likely. But, it got better... and more expensive.

Hey, DSL was 3x faster than 56K dialup (1536K down) and well worth the added cost, despite the downtime.

Recently, I finally decided to pull the plug. We were paying $98.00/mo for a plain oldskool landline telephone, which we never use these days (the tech asked how long our phones had been unplugged LoL), and 7.0 Mbp/sec down 0.7 Mbp/sec up ADSL2+.

However, when I went to their store to cancel my service, they said I could get 60.0 Mbp/sec down 5.0 Mbp/sec up VDSL2+ (bonded-pair) and VOIP telephone service for $59.00/mo.

I thought, "Yeah, right. Sure, whatever," but this bonded-pair VDSL (Actiontec C3000A modem) setup worked a treat. It's been nothing but excellent, so far. Time will tell.

So, to wrap this up, I've had a love/hate relationship with Qwest/CenturyLink since the get-go. I'm not going to gloss it over, and look at it through rose-colored glasses, nor ignore the past bad experiences with blue-sky thinking.

Sure, it is what it is... but, it's also what you make of it. That said, I'm a happy camper, at the moment.

~=[ UPDATE #1 - The Honeymoon ]=~

Just enabled IPv6 in the modem settings. It was stupid-simple to do. Works like a charm.

Also, I performed a Firmware update, even though my Actiontec C3000A modem was only 3 weeks old. Went without a hitch. All of my custom LAN settings were retained. YaY!

~=[ UPDATE #2 - Trouble in Paradise ]=~

Here's why I'm neutral on CenturyLink:

1) First bill, since the 60/5 Mbps upgrade, was $210.00/mo. Hello

2) The installation tech forgot to put my $150.00 modem purchase on the order, so I was being charged for leasing the modem, instead of owning it.

3) Basically, I was sold a 'bill of goods' by the salesman at the local CenturyLink Store.

4) CenturyLink closed, all of their stores, kiosks in malls, and so forth, during the past couple of weeks, so my 'punching bag' was unavailable. Phone support only. Probably safer for them, that way.

5) I contacted CenturyLink phone support. Supposedly, we have it straightened out now. This month's $210.00 bill be adjusted to $110.00. Next month's bill will be $225.00-ish, including the modem purchase. I canceled the landline, that the 'salesman-in-hiding' said I could keep (if I wanted). CenturyLink will be for Internet service only. And, the cost will be $45.00/mo +tax (CenturyLink Price For Life plan) for pair-bond 60/5 Mbps service.

6) Uh huh, uh huh. I'll believe it, when I see it.

7) Continuing...

~=[ Update #3 - All Good Now ]=~

Got my first $45/mo 'Price for Life' bill, and I'm happy again.

My 60/5 VDSL2+ connection has been solid as a rock, IPv6 & IPv4.

Dittos for the ActionTec C3000A gateway modem which I purchased.

Hopefully, it'll stay that way for awhile. It took months to get to this point.

~=[ Update #4 - 2024 Still Working ]=~

Gotta say, my service isn't fast by modern standards (Starlink and so forth) but it's been rock-solid dependable.

One of my PC's has 344 days uptime on the web (as I type). Can't beat that!

Still better than Cox, he'd be on 30/3 for $66.99 AND a cap with overages.. I'll never do business with that slimeball of a company.

The entire time I lived in Phoenix, if CenturyLink did not have 40+Mbps available, i'd turn the place down.
