Dragon Ball: The Breakers (ドラゴンボール ザブレイカーズ Doragon Bōru Za Burekāzu) is an asymmetrical action game developed by Dimps. It takes place in the same universe as the Dragon Ball Xenoverse games.[1]

Gameplay[]

The game is an asymmetrical action game in which players take on the role of the "Raider" who hunts down the rest of players and powers up as they do so, and "Survivors" who need to maneuver around the environment and make use of items and power-ups to evade the Raider and escape using a Super Time Machine either alone or cooperatively.

As the Survivor, their objective is to survive the Raider's onslaught. As normal civilians with no powers, they are relatively weak against the Raider's superpowered nature and can be knocked out easily. To aid in their survival, there are supply crates scattered around the area that contain items. These items include gadgets, consumables, vehicles, or Radars with specific features. Each Survivor can have an active gadget and passive skills that will aid in their survival against the Raider. As the Raider, their goal is to eliminate all Survivors. As a supervillain, they have the ability to fly, superstrength, and Ki Blasts. The raider starts at their weakest first form but will gradually evolve overtime and become stronger. As they gain a new form, they also gain an ability charge to destroy a location and render it inhabitable for Survivors or incapacitate survivors in the process. The Raider also has the ability to finish off incapacitated survivors to remove them from the game, but it requires time and leaves them vulnerable during the process without cancellation.

There are several objectives within the game: The Survivor's goal is to find Power Keys around the map that will enable them to activate a Super Time Machine. Once all keys are found, the Super Time Machine will be placed in the area for Survivors to activate. The activation takes time, but multiple Survivors can aid in the activation process. The Raider can prevent it by destroying the Super Time Machine. If the Super Time Machine is destroyed, or if survivor count drops to 3 before the Super Time Machine is summoned, the Survivors' only hope of survival is to escape on the escape Time Machine, which resembles Future Trunks' Time Machine.

Alternatively, the Survivors may fight against the Raider and defeat them by reducing their health to zero. To achieve this, survivors may find Rocket Launchers in supply crates that they can use against the Raider. For an efficient way to inflict damage, Survivors may find a Transphere in supply crates. These items grant the Survivor an ability to transform into a super warrior and enable them to fight at equal ground against the Raider. While in a superpowered state, Survivors are immune to being incapacitated, but their transformation is limited to time and any damage received from the Raider reduces it further. Survivors can use melee attacks against the Raider to deal increased damage to the Raider, but they will be flung away if they are not the same level or higher than the current level of the Raider. Survivors can also transform by finding Shenron's seven Dragon Balls in supply crates, or if the Raider is Frieza, by rescuing Namekians who are carrying the Dragon Balls. By finding all seven Dragon Balls, a Survivor must go to Shenron's altar to summon him to gain a choice of transforming into an ultimate version of their level 3 Transphere form that never expires, or they may choose to give the power to all other active Survivors, increasing their Charge Levels by one. The Raider can prevent Survivors from summoning Shenron by taking at least one Dragon Ball from the supply crate or from an incapacitated Survivor, thus rendering them unable to summon Shenron unless the Survivors are able to knockback the Raider, causing them to drop the Dragon Balls.

A new gameplay mechanic was introduced exclusive to the Broly Raider, namely the Super Transpheres, which function similarly to the Ultimate Dragon Change given via Shenron's wish for ultimate power. Super Transpheres will spawn in the locations of keys and are on the same level as the Raider at the time they are deployed onto the field. One Super Transphere will spawn per Raider level. Unlike the Ultimate Dragon Change from Shenron, you cannot choose what form and/or character you become once obtained. Obtaining a Super Transphere will also allow for you to use a regular Dragon Change following unlike Shenron's Ultimate Dragon Change, which removes your Dragon Change meter and sets it back to 0%.

Outside gameplay, there is a small hub with several shops. Here, they can visit a costume shop to customize their avatar's appearance. There is one shop that sells Transphere forms to players. There are also NPCs in the area for the player to talk to.

Story[]

Caught in an unexpected temporal phenomenon, seven ordinary citizens find themselves stranded in a Temporal Seam: they share their imprisonment with the Raider, a menacing enemy from another timeline with an overwhelming power.

Their only hope for survival is to break out from the Temporal Seam with the Super Time Machine, but the Raider is on their tracks and becomes stronger by the minute.

In a race against time the cunning of Survivors clashes with the power of the Raider, to break free or be broken.

Xenoverse 2 Crossover Events[]

XV2 - Survivor Oolong arrives in Conton City (1.18

Survivor Oolong after reaching Conton City in Xenoverse 2

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, as part of the 1.18.01 update DLC, The Breakers Oolong appears in Conton City as an NPC and acts as a bridge for crossover content in both games. In The Breakers, Oolong develops a fixation on nearby Conton City after taking up residence in the Time Patrol Base following the prologue. In Xenoverse 2, a cutscene reveals Oolong used a Time Machine to fly up to Conton City, only for it to explode mid-flight with him crash landing near the Time Nest portal where he is confronted by the Future Warrior, Chronoa, and Xeno Trunks who permit him to stay provided he behaves himself.

The Future Warrior can then speak to Oolong in Conton City to receive items and take part in Time Seam Quests where they rescue Survivors and confront Raiders inside Temporal Seams as a Time Patroller. Completing these quests in Xenoverse 2 can unlock certain rewards in The Breakers. Additional The Breakers and Xenoverse 2 special crossover challenge content was added to Xenoverse 2 via the 1.19.01 Update DLC. These challenges can be viewed by speaking to Oolong in either game. By completing specified objectives in both games on the same platform, players can obtain exclusive rewards.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third time Daman Mills has voiced Frieza since the passing of Chris Ayres having been his understudy.
  • Within the game files, there are assets that pertain to several characters not yet added/announced for the game. Some examples are the Z incarnation of Broly, Kefla, Hit, and Jiren.
  • Outside of the mobile games, this is the first appearance of Paragus (DBS) in a Dragon Ball game, despite only appearing as a stagnant model.
